AN ANALYSIS OF EATV WANAWAKE LIVE PROGRAM ON

PROMOTING GENDER EQUALITY IN TANZANIA

Introduction

This chapter encompasses the general concept of field work in Mass communication profession.
It shows the importance of women empowerment on media to the professional development of
gender equality in Tanzania.

Historical background of EATV.

East Africa Television (EATV) is the first and only free to air television station uniting Tanzania,
Kenya and Uganda that targets the vibrant and growing youth market of the 18 to 35 age group.
EATV's programming covers a variety of issues from News, Current Affairs, Lifestyle,
Entertainment and Social facets making it the leading local content producer in Tanzania and
across the region.

Recently, EATV added several new programs to its line up namely Wanawake Live, Wakilisha
and Tambuka which have expanded its viewership base.  EATV programs are of the highest
quality, delivered in various formats such as Talk-show, Magazine, Reality, Factual and
Interactive. All the above achievements make East Africa Television the number one youth
channel and the most popular television station in the region.

Wanawake Live TV show is hosted by Joyce Kiria also introduced as Super Woman Joyce Kiria.
She shows the challenges that women face and how to undermine the challenges.

Statement of the problem

Mass media has been noted to be such a tool to improve the gender functions for many years in
public organization sectors. Through utilization of the internet, Electronic procurement system
improves the efficiency in various stages of women liberation including searching for court help,
controlling abuse of women powers and allowing women to conduct different economic
activities.

Objectives of study

 To find out the understanding of women on Wanawake Live program and the promotion
of gender equality
 To find out what gender problems are facing women are discussed in Wanawake Live
program
 To find out the participation of Wanawake Live in other project concerning gender
equality
 Strengthen the ability to work collaboratively with members of different professional
backgrounds Improve skills of working with media to identify and assess problems
situation, set objectives, develop alternatives, and undertake shared responsibilities for
action plan to women.
 It helps students to understand and how to deal with women empowerment
 Develop capacity to initiate non-learning activities including the ability to seek and use
consultation and supervision effectively.
 To strengthen the ability of student to collaborate with other people in the organization in
order to get experience of people to fight for women liberation
 To understand and learn different behavior of the people in the organization and be able
to change in order to cope with them.
 Improves understanding of mutual aid with various resources and support systems in the
community.

Research Questions

(i) What is the importance of watching Wanawake Live TV show hosted at EATV?

(ii)What are the challenges facing women during the operation in public sectors?

(iii) What is the development that women can bring?

Content Scope

This study will focus on two variables, which are importance of Wanawake Live TV show hosted
at EATV and effects on the importance of women liberation, the independent variable is mass
media (Wanawake Live TV show and dependent variable is the impact to society, the study will
focus on the problem which is dependent variable which will be assisted by independent variable
so as to link the relationship between those two variables on this study.

Significance

First it help to improve gender equality in society on different sectors like working places and
institutions like education sectors

It expose the challenges facing women in process of having gender equality but also how to
solve them and have gender equality in Tanzania
