Tutorial activities:
Read the case study ’Using Centers in a Multitask Classroom’. This
case study discusses a complex classroom organisation comprising
of learning corners for students’ activities.

List out initial planning taken by Miss Miller in organising her


classroom. What are the rules and regulations set by Miss Miller?
How does she depict the rules and regulations as well as monitor

• Miss Miller designed a center that use for listening, reading, writing and creating in the
classroom.
• For the center, the students will work on variety of projects individually, in pairs and in
groups.
• For the center, Miss Miller had prepared a poster with a schedule. Usually she will remind
her students before posting it on the bulletin board.
• When the center became available, Miss Miller presented it to the class and demonstrating
it.
• She would point out two signs in each center. One sign is the procedures for the center and
the second sign is the capacity of that center.
• For example, the listening center has four capacities. In the center, Miss
Miller explained that students can sign up the centers when they arrive at
school.
• One period of the day, there will be a period called a “free time” where
the students can go to the centers they have chosen.
• Another period is “assigned center time” where Miss Miller decides who
should be in each center.
• For each center, Miss Miller usually brings up any common problem she
sees at the centers during rug time.
RULES

Student need to raise their hands to ask questions or to talk.


Station time for students
Teacher need to ensure that student visit the station at least once a day.
Students need to sign for attendance each morning before class.
Clear instructions need to be given to students.
Example:
Teacher asking the student that are able read by their own to go back
to their own place to do their reading meanwhile the others read loudly
with each other in the station.
The teacher end the lesson by asking the students to maintain
cleanliness of the station.
How does she depict the rules and regulations as well
as monitor students abiding to the rules and
regulations?

1) Miss Miller always ask questions to the students.
Example: is it done?
2) The students are encourage to ask questions.
Miss Miller will solve the problem that is faced by the students in the
“rug time” (Brainstorming).
3) Miss Miller will make sure every students visit the station that is set up earlier.
Assigned time station-make sure the student visit to the station.
She will guide each station carefully and make sure the student understand the
use of each station before another station is introduced.
Even when all the station has been introduce, she will still continue the
guidance and look through the problem that is face and discuss during
“rug time‟.
4) Miss Miller concerns to balance the station that is not visited so that the
objective in the station can achieve.
Whereas the other station will still function where the students move
independently.
