STUDENT TASK 2-1

DEFINE AND DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIVE LOADS.

EXPLAIN THEIR APPLICATION. (e.g. buildings? Or bridges?)

LIVE LOADS

 Live loads are those loads produce by the use and occupancy of the building or other
structure and do not include dead load, construction loads or environmental loads.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIVE LOADS

FLOOR LIVE LOADS

 This load shall be taken as the minimum live loads of horizontal projection to be used in the
design of buildings for the occupancies listed, and loads at least equal shall be assumed for
uses not listed in this section but that creates or accommodates similar loadings.

ROOF LIVE LOADS

 A typical roof is expected to support a live load of 20 psf; this minimum live load is in addition
to the dead load that roof must bear.
 Roof shall be designed for unit live loads. The live loads shall be assumed to act vertically
upon the area the area projected on a horizontal plane.

APPLICATION OF FLOOR LIVE LOADS

 Floor shall be designed to support safely the uniformly distributed live loads or the
concentrated loads whichever produces the greatest load effect. Unless otherwise specified
the indicated concentration shall be assumed to be uniformly distributed over an area 750-
mm square and shall be located so as to produce the maximum load effect of the structural
member.

APPLICATION OF ROOF LIVE LOADS

 Where uniform roof loads are involved in the design of structural members arranged to
create continuity, consideration may be limited to full dead loads on all span in combination
with full roof live loads on adjacent spans an on alternative spans.
 Exception: Alternate span loading need to be considered where the iniform roof live loads is
1kpa or more.
