OB INSTRUMENTS

Cesarean Section
CLASSIFICATION INSTRUMENT USE
RETRACTORS RICHARDSON A surgical
instrument used to
Retractors hold organs and tissues hold back organs
out of the surgical field. They also or the edges of an
open up incisions incision.

A handheld retractor
ARMY NAVY with broad blades
used for large
muscles.

The bladder blade, a

BLADDER part of the retractor
BLADE family, helps to keep
the bladder out of the
way of the operating
field.

DEAVER
A Deaver retractor is
a surgical instrument
used to hold the edges
of an abdominal or
chest incision open so
that the surgeon is
able to reach the
underlying organs.
The curved ends of
the retractor are
placed at the edges of
the incision and held
there by hand or
clamped into place.
The Deaver retractor
can be used to hold
organs inside the
abdominal cavity
away from the
surgical site.
Medical Tools
HARRINGTON Retractors used by
surgeons to either
actively separate the
edges of a surgical
incision or wound, or
can hold back
underlying organs
and tissues, so that
body parts under the
incision may be
accessed.

A towel clamp is a
TOWEL CLIP surgical instrument
which is used to
secure towels and
surgical draping
during a medical
procedure. In addition
to being used in the
operating room, towel
clamps are also used
in procedures in
clinics and doctor's
offices where drapes
are used. For
example, when a
dentist drapes a
patient to prepare for
a tooth cleaning,
towel clamps may be
involved. The
purpose of the clamp
is to make sure that
the draping stays in

A hemostat clamp
HEMOSTAT helps to control
bleeding, which is the
use of most clamps
during a surgery such
as this.

the tips.

Ovum forceps are

remove placental
fragments inside the
uterus. It is also used
as a hemostat or a
clamping instrument.

SCALPELS AND BLADE

SCISSORS
Scalpels and scissors are for
cutting and staplers are used to
close the cesarean incision after
the birth.
Scalpels are small,
SCALPEL sharp knives that are
used to make
incisions during
surgery.

Scalpels consist of a
shank, or handle, a
grooved area for
gripping, and a blade
seating area, where
the knife blade itself
attaches. They also
have a number for
identification
purposes.

Mayo scissors used

MAYO for dissection are
placed in tissue with
the tips closed. The
scissors are then
opened so that the
tips open and spread
out the tissue during
the dissection
process.
Metzenbaum
METZENBAU scissors are surgical
M scissors designed for
cutting delicate
tissue. The scissors
come in variable
lengths and have a
relatively long shank-
to-blade ratio. They
are constructed of
tungsten carbide and
blades can be curved
or straight. The blade
tips are blunt.
A Biopsy Punch,
BIOPSY TISCHLER usually disposable, is
PUNCH(CERVICA CERVICAL used for removing a
disk of tissue. It has
L) PUNCH sharp edges and it is
also a common
dermatology tool.

IV Cannulas are a
IV CANNULA kind of catheter that
can be inserted into a
patient's vein to
administer anesthesia,
medicine or other
solutions for drug
therapy. These
instruments prevent
the needle from
becoming dislodged
and minimize
exposure to patient
tampering.

A catheter is a
CATHETER flexible tube inserted
into the body to either
add or drain fluid
usually from the
bladder.
A colposcope is a
COLCOSCOPE large electric
microscope that is
positioned and
directed toward the
vagina and used to
view the cervix.

Shaped like a scoop

ENDOCERVICAL or spoon, these
CURRETE devices are used to
remove growths or
tissue from a body
cavity.

A speculum (Latin
VAGINAL for "mirror") (plural
SPECULUM specula or speculums)
is a medical tool for
investigating body
cavities, with a form
dependent on the
body cavity for which
it is designed. In old
texts, the speculum
may also be referred
to as a diopter or
dioptra. Like an
endoscope, a
speculum allows
entry into a body
cavity; endoscopes,
however, tend to have
optics while a
speculum is intended
for direct vision.
Designed for scraping
BUMM biological tissue or
PLACENTA debris in a biopsy,
excision, or cleaning
CURRETE procedure. In form,
the curette is a small
hand tool, often
similar in shape to a
stylus; at the tip of
the curette is a small
scoop, hook, or gouge
