Presenting the Matter

"Often when I write I am trying to make words do

the work of line and color. I have the painter's
sensitivity to light. Much ... of my writing is verbal
painting."

—Elizabeth Bowen

"But words are things, and a small drop of ink,

Falling like dew, upon a thought, produces
That which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think."

—George Gordon, Lord Byron

“Words can inspire. Words can destroy. Choose yours well.”—Peter Economy

The quotations cited above imply that the words you write or speak to
others can leave a huge impact and create a lasting impression--either good or
bad--so it is very important to choose them wisely. There are many thousands of
different words in the English language, but there are only eight different kinds of
words. These eight kinds, which are called “parts of speech,” are the noun, the
pronoun, the adjective, the verb, the adverb, the preposition and the conjunction.
Based on their use and function, words are categorized into several types or
parts of speech.

This portion of the module focuses on the two of the eight parts of speech,
the noun and the pronoun.

Jotting Down Targets:
