TUTORIAL 1

Q1) 1.1 Two solid cylindrical rods AB and BC are welded together at B and loaded as shown.
Knowing that d1 = 50 mm and d2 = 30 mm, find average normal stress at the midsection
of a) rod AB, b) rod BC

1.2 Two solid cylindrical rods AB and BC are welded together at B and loaded as shown. Knowing
that the average normal stress must not exceed 140 MPa in either rod, determine the smallest
allowable values of d1 and d2.

Q2) Two solid cylindrical rods AB and BC are welded together at B and loaded as shown. Determine
the average normal stress at the midsection of
a) rod AB, b) rod BC
Q3) In problem 2, determine the magnitude of the force, P for which the tensile stress in rod AB has
the same magnitude as the compressive stress in rod BC.

Q4) A strain gage located at C on the surface of bone AB indicates that the average normal stress in the
bone is 3.80 MPa when the bone is subjected to two 1200 N forces as shown. Assuming the cross
section of the bone at C to be annular and knowing that its outer diameter is 25 mm, determine the
inner diameter of the bone’s cross section at C.

Q5) When the force P reached 8 kN, the wooden specimen shown failed in shear along the surface
indicated by the dashed line. Determine the average shearing stress along that surface at the time of
failure.
Q6) Each of the four vertical members has a uniform rectangular cross section of 65mm  25mm

stress in the links connecting a) points B and D, b) points C and E.
Q8) Each of the links AB and link CD has uniform rectangular cross section of 9 mm by 35 mm. It is
connected to its support and to the horizontal member BCE with a pin diameter of 12 mm as
shown in the Figure below. Given that the maximum average normal stress is to be 190 MPa in
both links, determine the allowable load ‘P’ at point E when

Q10) In the hanger shown, the upper portion of link ABC is 10 mm thick and the lower portions are
each 6 mm thick. Epoxy resin is used to bond the upper and lower portions together at B. The pin
at A is of 10 mm diameter while a 6 mm diameter pin is used at C. Determine
a) the shearing stress in pin A
b) the shearing stress in pin C
c) the largest normal stress in link ABC
d) the average shearing stresses on the bonded surfaces at B
e) the bearing stress in the link at C

Q11) The horizontal link BC is 6 mm which, has a width, w = 30 mm, and is made of a steel with a 450
MPa ultimate strength in tension. What is the factor of safety if the structure shown is designed to
support a load P = 40 kN?
