#8423 or the Traditional and Alternative Medicines Act of 1997

Dr. Juan Flavier – authored the R.A. 8423 which was approved on December 9, 1997

According to section 1 this Act shall be known as the "Traditional and Alternative Medicine
Act (TAMA) of 1997."

Is an act creating the Philippine Institution of Traditional and Alternative Health Care(PITAHC)
which aims to promote and advocate the use of traditional and herbal medicines in the
Philippines thus this set for the production and use of alternatives medicines from certain herbs
which are proven safe, effective and affordable.

Significance:

 Promote effectivity and safe use of traditional and herbal medicines

 Accelerate the development of traditional and alternative health care in the Philippines

 Promoting developmental fund and other purposes for alternative health care

These are the main objectives of TAMA of 1997

 To encourage scientific research on and develop traditional and alternative


health care systems that have direct impact on public health care;

 To promote and advocate the use of traditional, alternative, preventive and


curative health care modalities that have been proven safe, effective, cost
effective and consistent with government standards on medical practice;

 To develop and coordinate skills training courses for various forms of traditional
and alternative health care modalities;
 To formulate standards, guidelines and codes of ethical practice appropriate for
the practice of traditional and alternative health care

 To formulate policies for the protection of indigenous and natural health


resources and technology from unwarranted exploitation, for approval and
adoption by the appropriate government agencies;

 To formulate policies to strengthen the role of traditional and alternative health


care delivery system

 To promote traditional and alternative health care in international and national


conventions, seminars and meetings with different organizations.

CLO#3 List down and discuss the different health care modalities practiced in the
Philippines

 Acupuncture – is a from of treatment in which it involves inserting very thin needles


through specific points in the skin, in various depths

Pros:

1. Very few side effects

2. Provide high energy levels

Cons:

1. It causes infection to occur

2. Not guaranteed success of treatment


 Acupressure- an ancient form of massage that is one of the treatment methods used in
Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is a method of applying pressure to specific points in the
body.

Pros:

1. Safe for the body.

2. Relaxes the muscles and encourage blood flow in to the body

3. Relieves stress and tension

Cons:

1. Not that effective as massage.

 Aromatherapy- treatment that uses natural plant extracts to promote health therapeutic
benefits which uses aromatic essential oils medicinally to improve physical and
emotional health.

Pros:

1. Safe and natural

2. Availability of essential oils throughout the country/readily available products.

Cons:

1. It promotes seasonal allergies


2. Can cause minimal side effects

 Chiropractic- is an alternative medicine or complementary medicine that emphasize on


treatment through manual adjustment or manipulation of the spine.

Pros:

1. Can relieve stress due to longer feeling of pain

2. Can improve spinal and joints functions

Cons:

1. Possibility of stroke

2. It can lead to soreness and stiffness


 Herbal medicine or Phyto medicine- involves the usage of herb-based traditional
medicinal practice that employs different plant materials that are both preventive and
therapeutic.

Pros:

1. They are natural medications

Cons:

1. Herbal medicines are not FDA approved

2. Can cause side effects

 Massage-is the practice of rubbing, patting and kneading the body using the hands.

Pros:

1. Improves circulation

2. Increases the ROM of joints

3. Reduces pain

Cons:

1. Can lead to soreness and stiffness


 Nutritional therapy- is a therapeutic approach in treating medical conditions through the
use of individual formulated nutritional diet that is monitored by a physician or a dietitian

Pros:

1. can improve health condition or prevent complications

2. follow a dietary plan at own pace and at home

3. prevent or improve health conditions

Cons:

1. High cost of food

 Pranic healing- is a modern, non-touch energy healing modality, which is based on the
fundamental principle that the body has the innate ability to heal itself

Pros:

1. Relaxes the body and


mind
 Reflexology-is a type of massage that involves applying different amounts of pressure
to the feet, hands, and ears.

Pros:

1. Decrease stress and pain in the body

2. Improves circulation

Cons:

1. Can lead to soreness and fatigue
