OF MEDICINE

INTRODUCTION:
 There are so many alternatives ways of
treatment in whole world other than
allopathy. Alternative medicine include
various healing approaches and therapies
that originate from around the world.
 Alternative medicine includes therapies
and health care practices, however many
such practices are popular and some ae
used in hospital patient are most likely to
seek alternatives medicine for conditions
such as chronic low back-pain, stress,
migraine, headaches, menopausal
symptoms, cancer and arthritis.
COMPLEMENTARY &
ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE:
CAM:
 Complementary and alternative
medicine (CAM) is the term for medical
products and practices that are not part of
standard care.
 Standard care is what medical doctors,
doctors of osteopathy, and allied health
professional, such as nurses and physical
therapists, practice.
 USES OF CAM:
 Complementary medicine is used together
with standard medical care.
CAM:
 Alternative medicine is used in place of
standard medical care.
 The claims that CAM treatment providers
make can sound promising.
 However, researchers do not know how
safe CAM treatments are or how well they
work.
 Studies are underway to determine the
safety and usefulness of many CAM
practices.
TYPES OF CAM:
TYPES OF CAM:
 ALTERNATIVE MEDICAL SYSTEM:
 1.Ayurveda:- it is a system of healing
based on homeopathy and naturopathy,
with an extensive use of herbs.
 Ayurveda consist of the word AYUS,
meaning ”LIFE” and VEDA meaning
‘REALATED TO KNOWLEDGE’ or
‘SCIENCE’.
CAM:-
 AIMS:-
 To remove the causes of disorders
 Prevent illness and harmonize body, mind
and consciousness.
 Ayurveda aids in maintaining good health
 Increase longevity and overall quality of
life.
 Alternative ayurvedic treatments and
self help regimens include: nutrition,
herbal remedies, massage treatments,
panchakarma, yoga, & sound therapies.
CAM:
 2.Siddha:-
 The siddha medicine is a form of south
Indian, tamil traditional medicine, and part
of trio Indian medicines- Ayurveda,
siddha, and unani.
 It is a comprehensive system, that places
equal emphasis on the body, mind and
spirit and strives to restore the innate
harmony of the individual.

 AIMS:-
 It restored the mind-body system
 It promote the growth and development of
siddha system of medicine all over the
world
 It provide medical relief through siddha
system
 Diet and lifestyle play a major role not
only in maintaining health but also in
curing diseases.

 3.Unani & Tibbi:-
 As an alternative form of medicine, unani has found favour in asia, especially india. In india
those practitioner can practices as qualified doctors, as the Indian government approves their
practice. Unani medicine is very close to Ayurveda.
 The unani system of medicine offers treatment of disease related to all the systems and organs
of the human body. The treatments for chronic ailments and diseases of skin, liver, Musculo-
skeletal and reproductive systems, immunological and lifestyles disorders have been found to
be highly effective and acceptable.

 4.Homeopathy:-
 Homeopathy or homeopathic medicine,
is a medical philosophy and practice based
on the idea that the body has the ability to
heal itself
 It is based on the idea that ‘like cures like’
 Homeopathy was founded in Germany
and has been widely practiced throughout
Europe.
 Homeopathic medicine views symptoms
of illness as normal response of the body as
it attempts to regain health.

 5.Naturopathy:-
 It is a system of health care which promotes
the body’s own self-healing mechanism, it
uses natural therapies such as:-
 Nutrition
 Herbal medicine
 Acupuncture
 Exercise
 Fasting etc.
 Without using standard drugs and surgery.

 BIOLOGICALLY BASED ON
TREATMENTS:-
 1.Herbal medicine:- it is the study of
pharmacognosy.
 The major use of herbal medicine is for
health promotion and therapy for chronic ,
as opposed to life-threatening conditions,

powerful herb medicines are:-
 Gingko
 Turmeric
 Evening primrose oil
 Flex seed
 Tea tree oil
 Echinacea
 Grapeseed extract
 Lavender

 2.Nutrional therapy:- it is a system of
healing based on the belief that food; as
nature intended.
 It provides the medicine we need to obtain
and maintain a state of health.
 This therapy will also benefits you if you
have no specific illness, but want to
maintain a state of optimum health
 It is safe for babies and children and as
well as adults

 MIND-BODY TECHNIQUES:-
 Mind-body techniques are based on the theory, that mental and emotional factors can
influence physical health, behavioural, psychologic, social, and spiritual methods are used to
preserve health and prevent or cure disease.
 Methods include the following:-
 Meditation
 Relaxation techniques
 Guided imagery
 hypnotherapy
CAM:
 1.MEDITATION:-
 Meditation means sitting or resting
quality, often with the eyes closed, which
stills the mind for greater self-awareness.
 Meditation also helps in reduction of pain
and reliving stress
 It also involves sometimes the repetitive
sounding of a mantra, which helps the
person to focus.
 Meditation promotes relaxation.

 2.RELAXATION TECHNIQUES:-
 Relaxation techniques are practices
specifically designed to relieve the tension
and strain.
 The specific techniques may be aimed at
reducing activity of the nerves that control
the stress response(symptomatic nervous
system) lowering blood pressure, altering
brain wave activity.
 Relaxation techniques may be used in
combination with other techniques such as
meditation, guided imagery, or
hypnotherapy.

 3.GUIDED IMAGERY:-
 Guided imagery involves the use of
mental images, to promote relaxation and
wellness, reduce pain, or facilitate healing
of particular ailment, such as cancer or
psychological trauma.
 The images can involve any of the senses
and may be self directed or guided by a
practitioner, sometimes in a group setting.

 4.HYPNOTHERAPY:-
 Hypnotherapy also may be helpful in treating many conditions and symptoms in which psychological factors can
influence physical symptoms:-
 Phobias
 Smoking cessation
 Headaches
 Asthma
 Some skin disorders(such as warts and psoriasis)
 High BP.
 Nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, particularly the nausea some people get before chemotherapy
 Anxiety and diminished quality of life in people who have cancer.

METHODS:-
 1.YOGA:- yoga is essentially a spiritual
discipline based on an extremely subtle
science, which focuses on bringing
harmony between mind and body.
 YOGA is derived from the Sanskrit root
‘yuj’ meaning ‘to join’ or ‘to yoke’ or ‘to
unite’.
 PURPOSE:- the fundamental purpose of
yoga is to foster harmony in the body,
mind, social, and spiritual development.

 2.ACUPUNCTURE:-
 An acupuncturist will insert needles into
persons body with the aim of balancing
their energy.
 This, it is claimed, can help boost
wellbeing and may cure some illnesses.
 Conditions, it is used for include different
kinds of pain, such as headache, blood
pressure problems, and whopping cough,
among others.

 3.REFLEXOLOGY:-
 It is a type of massage that involves
applying different amounts of pressure to
the feet, hands, and ears.
 It’s based on a theory that these body
parts are connected to certain organs and
body systems. People who practice this
technique are called REFLEXOLOGY.
 It generally relaxing and may help
alleviate stress.

 ROLE OF NURSE IN COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE THERAPY:-
 The integrative medicine approach is consistent with the holistic approach nurses are taught to
practice.
 Nurses have the potential for becoming essential praticipants in this type of health care philosophy.
 Nurses should be knowledgeable of CAM therapies to make appropriate recommendation,.
 Nurses should also provide advice to client regarding when to seek conventional therapies or
CAM therapies.
 Nurses need to be aware of their state nurse practice act with regard to CAM therapies and
practice only with in the scope of these laws
 Nurse have knowledge regarding current researches being done in this area to provide accurate
information not only to patient but to other health care professionals.
