5.2.1 Short description
Armature converters
- Single-phase single quadrant TPa2…1B and TPy2…1B . The power section of the
Tpa2..1B converters consists of a mixed single-phase bridge for the power supply of
small power DC motors with separate excitation. As for the field power supply, the
converter has a single-phase Graetz rectifier bridge supplied with an RC protection
filter. In order not to overcome the form factor stated by the producer, it could be
necessary to supply the armature circuit with a leveling choke. The adjustment to other
voltages, frequencies and tacho reaction is obtained via resistors (Tpa2…1B) and/or
internal switches (TPy2…1B). The TPy2…1B converters make it possible to mount up
to three “y” option cards on the rear side of the regulation card with an internal con-
nection to the converter via a flat cable and a FA… connector.
- Single-phase four quadrant TPy2…4B. The power section consists of a non-parallel

and double Graetz bridge. For the armature reaction use the TVO-1 transducers
and if the ramp circuit is needed, use the AGy option card. For other features see
TPy2…1B.
- Three-phase single and two quadrant TPy3…2B. The power section consists of an
internally controlled Graetz bridge for the power supply of medium and big DC
motors with separate excitation. As for the field power supply the converter has a
single-phase Graetz rectifier bridge supplied with an RC protection filter and a circuit
with an excitation loss relay. The three series, TPy3-415/480-…-2B, TPy3-500/600-
…-2B and TPy3-660/800-…-2B are different only for the maximum power supply

voltage on the power section and for a part of the regulation section connected via a
connector cable. Starting from the 110A size, the converters are forced-ventilated.
The two quadrant functioning methods with a recovery braking and the three
quadrant functioning methods with a reversible field controller (Tpey2…4B) require
the use of devices with the “+e” option. On the converter it is possible to put up to
four “y” option cards (for “TPy..2B+e” a maximum of three) on the rear side of the
regulation card with an internal connection to the converter via a flat cable and a
FA… connector.
- Three-phase four quadrant TPy3…4B. The power section consists of an internally

controlled non-parallel double Graezt bridge and a conduction logic interblock.
It allows functioning in the four quadrants for the power supply of medium and big
DC motors with separate excitation. The presence of a f.c.e.m. feed-forward allows
to obtain short interblock times during the torque inversions. As for the field power
supply the converter has a single-phase Graezt rectifier bridge supplied with an RC
protection filter and a circuit with an excitation loss relay.
The three series, TPy3-415/440-…-4B, TPy3-500/520-…-4B and TPy3-660/700-
…-4B are different only for the maximum power supply voltage on the power section.
The regulation sections have no differences. The converters up to the 650A size have
a compact structure while bigger sizes consists of a power and a regulation section
connected via a connector cable. Starting from the 110A size, the converters are
force-ventilated. On the converter it is possible to put up to four option “y” cards on
the rear side of the regulation card with an internal connection to the converter via a
flat cable and a FA …connector.

Field converters (TPea-…, TPey2-…, …+FC…)

The power section of the field converters consists of a semi-controlled single-phase bridge for TPea…1B, a totally
controlled single-phase bridge for TPey…2B and …+FC.., a totally controlled single-phase non-parallel double brid-
ge for TPey2…4B .
The field converters are used for a mixed regulation with constant torque and power, for the constant field regulation
and/or for a speed adjustment of non-parallel armature-connected motors. All field converters are protected against
voltage peaks. The signals and commands are connected to the terminal strip in TPea…1B, are internally perfor-
med in the ..+FC version and are transmitted via a flat cable and “X” connector in TPey2.
Regulators with gating control

- Single-phase (TPy1-…-2A)
With voltage gating and phase control. They are suitable for galvanic plants and for temperature regulations.
- Three-phase (TPy3-…-2A)
With voltage gating and phase control for resistive, inductive and ohm-inductive loads. The temperature regulation
and the heating are direct on the resistors or they are interposed by a transformer.
Sinusoid train actuators (TPy1-…-2AO)

Sinusoid train actuators with load-limited current. These are suitable for temperature regulation. By controlling the
voltage increase via a starting gating control, it is possible to avoid high currents for example when the Rcaldo/Rfreddo
is particularly high.

5.2.4 Options
The option cards are used to complete and expand those systems with Typact converters, Typact regulators and
Ampact inverters.
Dimensions of the a x b cards = 63 (or n x 63) x 106 mm
- Mounting on the device behind the regulation card or on a DIN EN 50 022-35 guide.
The mounting accessories are supplied together with the card.
- The “y” options are connected one to the other or to the converter via the “X” connector and a 16-pole flat cable
according to DIN 41 651, construction form A (to be ordered separately).
- The external connections are performed via several terminals suitable to connect cables without lugs.
- The power supply voltage derives from the converter or from the ALy (P) power supply.
