indebted to our principal, Dr. A PASUPATHY who run the institution most efficiently
and has played a major hand in enabling me to do this seminar.

I proudly thank Assistant Professor Mrs. HARITHA V P, HOD, Department of Civil

Engineering who has been an invaluable guide and also a great source of inspiration and
strength to my work.

I would like to thank Assistant Professor Mrs. AKHILA AGNES MATHEW, my

guide who provided me with kind criticism, attention to detail and support in polishing
this work.

I express my sincere thanks and gratitude to Assistant Professor Mrs. ANU GEORGE
seminar coordinator for her gracious help in pointing me to the right direction.

I convey my sincere thanks to all the teaching, non-teaching staff and lab assistants for
their support in completing the seminar.

I would like to express my heart-felt gratitude to my parents without whom i would not

ABSTRACT

Housing is one of the basic needs of society and is an essential component of the
built environment. The Ministry of Rural Development estimated that the rural
housing shortage in India stands at 44 million dwelling units. India’s urban housing
shortage is 18.78 million units, of which 96% pertains to Economically Weaker
Section (EWS) and Low Income Group (LIG) type, as per the estimate of the
Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation. The demand for conventional
building materials used in the housing sector such as burnt clay bricks, cement and
steel is growing every year. Reduction in the use of these energy intensive
construction materials and speedy delivery of housing units at affordable cost are the
key challenges faced in the mass housing sector today

Buildings using Glass Fibre Reinforced Gypsum (GFRG) panels (infilled with
reinforced concrete) hold promise as a rapid, affordable and sustainable mass
housing solution It promises such a solution for rapid affordable mass housing in
India . GFRG building system is a rapid building technology composed of
prefabricated wall panel load system. GFRG is also an eco friendly building material
which can be manufactured out of either natural or industrial gypsum. In India these
panels have been manufactured from the fertilizer by- product waste.

In this seminar I presented all details about GLASS FIBRE REINFORCED

GYPSUM PANELS (GFRG) including manufacturing, installation, applications of
panels etc and provide details about the case study

Key Words: GFRG Panels, Rapid walls, Affordable mass housing
