OPINION
Children should not be encouraged to learn about the arts. Time in
school should be purely devoted to academic subjects like language and
maths. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It has been proposed that students fully focus on language and
maths and not take up any art classes anymore. Although
language and maths should be given more time as they
prepare children for their higher studies, I do not at all agree
that the study of arts be totally omitted from the school
curriculum.
Other people may support the proposal because they place a
greater importance on students’ academic competitiveness. They
may think that the primary reason why students go to school is to
learn, so they give more value on academic subjects and
disregard subjects about the arts.
Nevertheless, I strongly believe that students benefit more if
they also study arts and music. Studies show that children acquire
equally useful skills like the abilities to concentrate, innovate and
imagine when they take up art subjects. Not only that, students
are better off in life if they receive holistic education. It may be
true that children become more academically driven when they
spend their time solely on the study of language and maths, yet
their understanding about the world is incomplete as life is not all
about numbers and words. What I deem appropriate is for the
school to continue offering these art subjects although more
time should be dedicated to the learning of language and
maths.
All in all, even if students are primarily sent to school to be
academically competitive, I think it is much better if they continue
to study the arts as they benefit more if they study different
subjects.

by specific charitable groups, be they local or international, I
am convinced that what matters the most is that everybody
contributes.
Some say that when giving donations, it is better for people to do
it locally. They contend that the money donated to local
organisations is put to more use as it can be used to address
problems that beset communities where the donors reside. It has
also been said that in doing so local donors do not only help but
also benefit from the same help they are giving. Not fully
convinced, others insist that it is better to extend financial aid to
charities that operate nationally and internationally. They argue
that these institutions can reach out to more people and address
more serious problems, so the help people extend becomes more
valuable. They also believe that since global problems have
wider impact, as in the case of the Ebola virus that is currently
plaguing most of Africa, they then claim that it is more sensible to
donate to Doctors without Borders, an organisation that leads in
providing help to Ebola victims.
My impression is that both views are equally relevant. Local
donations are indeed important as they address local needs.
Nevertheless, donations to national and international charities are
also needed since there are also urgent problems that affect
countries and those that live overseas. What is important here is
that everybody donates. The world may be replete with so many
problems, yet they can be easily solved if every living person
contributes. I guess this is what globalisation is about. Since we
now live in one village, everybody is interconnected, and any form
of help is already considered material.
By and large, what truly matters is that people give as different
problems call for different solutions. Despite its many problems,
the world shall continue to thrive if the people inhabiting it continue
to give freely to uplift the lives of others.

Although societies around the world are richer and more advanced
than ever before, people are not as happy as they used to be. Why
is this the case? What can be done to ensure that people continue
to be happy?
It cannot be denied that as cities worldwide develop, people
become harder to please and satisfy. In this essay, I am going
to explain why this is happening, and I shall cite some ways
to guarantee that everybody continues to be happy in life.
A number of factors exist why people in the modern world
find it increasingly difficult to be happy. First of all, with all the
improvements they have witnessed in all aspects of their lives,
people have developed very sophisticated tastes over the years,
and their expectations about life have become higher and higher.
A case in point is the fact that owning household appliances, which
used to be a big source of happiness from families before, is now
only seen as one of the basics in life. Another consideration is
the complicated relationships people have at present. Because of
their desire to accumulate more material things, people devote
more time at work than with their families, and as a consequence,
relationships suffer, thus leading to unhappy marriages and
ultimately to higher divorce rates and broken communication lines.
There are, however, some ways that can be done to ensure
that everybody is happy. On the one hand, people should stop
equating happiness with material possessions as these things can
merely offer temporary bliss, one that disappears as soon as these
belongings are worn out or go out of fashion. On the other hand,
people also need to identify their priorities in life. If they are so
bent on getting wealthy by investing more hours in the workplace
than at home, they need to know the reason why they are doing
this in the first place. If indeed they are doing this for their loved
ones, it is imperative that they do not allow their relationships to
suffer. The key element here is striking a balance in all things.
On the whole, there may be a number of factors why happiness
seems elusive nowadays, yet there are also some ways to
observe to help others continue to be happy.
