DESIGN THINKING

WHAT IS DESIGN THINKING?

“Design Thinking is about accelerating innovation to create better solutions to the

challenges facing business and society. It starts with people - what we call human centered
design - and applies the creative tools of design, like storytelling, prototyping, and
experimentation, to deliver new breakthrough innovation.”

– Tim Brown, CEO, IDEO. Change by Design.

THE 5 PHASES OF DESIGN THINKING.

These worksheets take you step by step through Design Thinking.

HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU HAVE A GREAT DESIGN?

Great design meets three essential criteria.

1. Desirability: Is this what people want?
2. Feasibility: How easily can we do this? Is this affordable? Do we have personnel 1? Do we
have enough time?
3. Viability: Is this sustainable2? Can we keep it going for a long time? Who will keep it
going?
Great innovation is where desirability, viability and feasibility come together.

1. Personnel: people employed in an organization

2. Sustainable: able to be maintained at a certain rate or level

Defining the challenge often begins by noticing problems.

Phase 1
Sometimes it comes out as wishes (“I really wish we had...”)
Sometimes it comes out as complaints (“It annoys me that we’re not...”) Either starting point is fine.

Problems we see: Keeping design concepts in consideration, Being distinct, Being multi-talented, Keeping an eye out
for other design disciplines, Identifying the ideal clients, Inspiring young talent to strive for greatness.

Select a problem from above to be your design challenge: Keeping design concepts in consideration

My dreams: My concerns:

Designers must stay faithful to fundamental In that case they need to maintain the conceptual
concepts while keeping up with technology and
They must be bold enough to test new techniques user involvement all the time.
In this sense they need to more prepare for
adaptation of new technology quickly, and
constantly recognize the value of performing the
job properly.

Now let’s turn this into a How Might We Challenge (HMW) Question:

How might we design a Concept that

Would Identify the ideal clients

for ?
Young people

Now we will look for opportunities by first seeking inspiration.

Tools for building empathy

Phase 2

Design Thinking is human-centered. Human-centered design starts with understanding the perspectives of the people
who will use the design. We seek inspiration through research and developing user empathy. External research helps us
find new trends or key information to inspire new ideas. Gathering information from users develops empathy and
shapes our understanding of their needs and values. This helps us define insights. We will learn three tools to help you
become more empathetic—ability to understand another’s feelings.

Observe: Watch what people do. Video or sketch your observations.

Take note of these things: What are they doing? How are they doing it?
And why are they doing it?

Engage: Interact with the people through talking with them. Conduct an
interview.

Immerse: Become the user. Use the design yourself. How does it work
for you? How do you feel using it? What would you do differently? How
would you want it to change? You can also learn about external trends
and practices by doing online research.

Observation Plan
Observe 3 different people engaged in an activity
related to your challenge or search online for what others are doing in
this area.Y ou can write down descriptions to help you remember.A
nswer the questions below as you observe.

Phase 2
Notes
What are they doing?

Need to find out what young people are doing nowadays. Are they busy with TikTok? Should I need to make a new idea
that relace Tik Tok Apps? Are they spending most of the time on making videos?
How are they doing it? They are making videos all the time and that the main source of using Tik Tok. On the other hand,
most of the people are watching them, like and share their content either. In they way sometimes they become viral and
bring happiness with people by posing funny contents as well.

Why are they doing it this way? Because It creates fun and make a them famous easily among rest of the other tik tok
users. On the other hand, at a certain point they can earn money form that apps that enhance the possibility to make
more videos.

Engage
1. Create an interview guide with open ended questions.
2. Interview a person about their experience related to the design
challenge.

Example Question: Ask users, “What are your needs, wants, fears and
concerns?”
Phase 2
Question: What is the most fears during design? Answer: In that case it is hard to find out the actual
needs that users want form a design concept?
Question: What are the needs? Answer: A suitable platform is mandatory for making a good design along
with a great team

Questions: Answers:

Question: Answer:
Immersion Experience
Be a user. ‘Walk in their shoes’ and gain their perspective.
Example: What does it feel like to be a person doing this
activity? What 3 things will YOU do to experience your
challenge? As you go through each process, be sure to write
down or sketch your reflections on the questions below. You
can also learn about trends and practices by doing online research. Phase 2
Notes

What did I do?

To find the right clients I would go for a beta version of that design using them on through the people and waiting for the
response how it is creating its impact. For example, whuch types of people are more likely to enjoy it.

What was enjoyable? In that case since I would rather work for an alternative version off TikTok so it found interesting
and people are going to love it. On the other hand, since we already have popular apps inside the market so it is tough to
make it more attractable among all of these.

What would I change or add to this experience? In that case I would go for more flexibility and less bugs in the apps
because most of the users are going to use it as fun part so it should be more flexible. Moreover, since it is depended on
video activities so I need to use more options and filter so that it become more popular and different rather than those
popular apps.
Reflect
Now,r eflect on all the data you have collected to document this
empathy map.*

Phase 2

Feelings & Emotions Thoughts & Beliefs

Overwhelmed What else am I missing?
Excited Wasting too much time?
User whom to trust I want something awesome
Fear Why is this so hard?
Anxious What is best for me
May be this isn’t best for me

Young group of
people

Speak
Actions I was expecting something
Checks the websites. awesome.
List pros and cons What do you think?
More research Where should I start?
Make small decisions What size is best?
Compares products What brand I like?
Postpone big decisions

Insights
Based on the data from the Inspiration phase, we define key insights, the
things people most value or need. From these insights we define the key
opportunities related to our challenge question. We refine our challenge
question (HMW) to address the opportunities we uncovered in the
Inspiration and Empathy phase. Remember insights are non-obvious and
authentic.*
Phase 3
Questions:

Based on your research and empathy exercises what have you learned?

In that case I have to take all the steps though more thinking and proper analyzation so that there is no points become
left which is necessary.

People seem to value….. More creative work and which is giving them more advantages by sending them more flexible
user experience.

People are motivated by … New innovation which produce more options and offers to perform better and make them
unique rather that other apps

People need …. to give feedback about the beta version of the new design so that it could get easier to find any flaws
regarding those apps.

Now put your opportunity into your new How Might We challenge question. Something like this...

How might we design a that

Fun…activities
Brainstorming
.
Through brainstorming we generate as many ideas as possible

Phase 4
Ideate

After brainstorming, vote and identify your top 1-3 ideas to take forward.

1. I am going to use more beauty filter though my design so that young people could have more chances
to make them perfect in the video content

2. It have to be more natural and flexible and easy to operate.

3. In that case it should be more available rather than other apps by putting no advertises.
Feedback Grid
When sharing sketches and storyboards this feedback grid helps to gather
input.

Phase 4

Good Change
Easier to operate. The color of the functional buttons
More functions and features Size of the interface
Lots of video motions and filters Time duration
Looks people more beautiful and realistic in the video

Questions Ideas
Is it full of proper security? Time duration could be enhanced
Is that app can help me to earn money? Using more beautiful songs
Does it steal my personal identity? Bring celebrity to promote the apps
Prototype & Test
Experiment with prototyping and testing.
Design a prototype using maker supplies.
Now, plan and conduct a test for your design
to see if it accomplishes your goal.*

Phase 5

Prototyping
1. Draft a solution prototype description: In that case we are going to use the beta version of the apps and
making videos and compare to other apps.

Testing
Example Test: A library was about to implement a glass walled quiet room. Instead of spending thousands of dollars
to build the idea, the library tested the idea by sectioning off the proposed space with tape and visibly marking it a
quiet zone. This allowed the library to conduct a low-cost and quick scaled test to see if their idea would be practical
prior to spending money on full-scale construction.

3. What assumptions need to be tested?

How fast we can process the video?
How much it could increase the video quality using mor options and filters
How much time it has needed to complete the task

Test activities: Hire some people to use those apps and keep taking feedback from them.

In the lab we can match the algorithm of other popular apps and find out how its responses.
Test success criteria: Ensure better Quality

Desirable: yes
O

Feasable:Yes Time: One month
