LOE or Level Of Effort type of activities 

Level of effort Type of activities are used to summaries several activities into one activity that encompasses the overall time frame of all of the 
activities. Its predecessor MUST have a SS relationship and its successor MUST have a FF relationship. 

To create a LOE activity select the general tab and then select Level of Effort under the activity type 

 
 

Next select the relationship tab and select the appropriate predecessor and make sure that the relationship type is SS (start to start). Next select 
the appropriate successor and make sure that the relationship type is FF (finish to finish). 

 
After you calculate the schedule you will see the results of the LOE. 

Example #1: The LOE activity uses the same start date as it predecessor because it has a start to start relationship and uses the same end date as 
the last activity because it’s successor has a finish to finish relationship. The duration is automatically calculated between its predecessor start date 
and it’ successor finish date.

 Progressing a LOE type of activity 
You do not have to progress a LOE type of activity. The actual date of the LOE will automatically be assigned the same actual start date as it’s 
predecessor. The remaining duration will automatically be calculated from the data date (once the activity has an actual start) to the end date of its 
successor with the finish to finish relationship. 

Example #2: Shows that the activity named one or activity id A1000 has an actual start date of August 3, 2012 and as you can see the LOE activity 
automatically assumed this same start date. The last activity finish date is now August 31, 2102 and the LOE activity has automatically adjusted 
itself to match the completion of it’s successor activity named four or activity id A1030. The remaining duration has also adjusted itself and has 
calculated the number of days from the data date to finish date of its successor.

These types of activities can be used to summarize anything and can also be used on support labor type of activities such as project support 
activities.  

 
 RESOURCES used on LOE 
Resources such as man‐hours can be assigned to a LOE type of activity. By default the resource will be spread linearly.  

Example #3: Shows that the man‐hours are spread linearly over the LOE time frame.  

 
 ACTUAL RESOURCES on LOE 

Example #4: Show that actual man‐hours and remaining man‐hours are automatically updated as the LOE activity progresses.
