1. Water is the working fluid in a Rankine cycle with reheat.
The pressure and
temperature at the first turbine inlet are 1200 lbf/in2 and 900oF, respectively, while at the second turbine inlet are 900 lbf/in2 and 900oF, respectively. The condenser pressure is 1 lbf/in2. The cooling water experiences a temperature increase from 60 to 80oF. If isentropic efficiency of both turbines are 90%, determine: a. Net power developed per unit mass of steam flow [Btu/lb] b. The thermal efficiency [%] c. Ratio of mass flow rate of the cooling water to the steam flow through the second turbine stage.
2. A plate, AISI 316 1.3 ft diameter and 5 mm
thick, closes a 1-ft-diameter hole in a tank containing air and water as shown in the right figure. A cube-block of concrete having length of 1.2 ft, is suspended from the plate and is completely immersed in the water. As the air pressure is increased, the differential reading, h, on the inclined-tube mercury manometer increases. Determine h just before the plate starts to lift off the hole.
3. An electrical power transformer dissipates energy
of 900 W by heat transfer. From specification, maximum transformer surface temperature is limited at 50oC. To maintain the surface temperature at allowable value, engine oil at 25oC is circulated through thin-walled tubing of 20-mm diameter welded to the lateral surface of the transformer. All the power dissipated by the transformer is assumed to be transferred to the oil. If the allowable temperature rise of the coolant is only 7oC, determine the total length of tube.
