Assignment 1 CE-418 Fall 2019 Total Marks: 100

Question No 1
Define the following: (35)
1. Permeability and porosity
2. Abstraction and evapotranspiration
3. Stream flow
4. Erosion and sediment yield
5. Bulk density and particle density
6. Saturation, field capacity, wilting point and hygroscopic water
7. Hydrograph and hyetograph

Question No. 2 (10)

Calculate the amount of ET from a 3.5 km2 watershed that received a rainfall amount
of 6 in, and the runoff from the watershed was 3500 L. Infiltration was estimated to be
1.2 cm (which includes both baseflow and deep percolation). Storage can be assumed
negligible. What was the total monthly ET in mm.
Question No. 3.
(a) If you are going 65 mile/hr, what is your speed in mm per second? (5)

(b) If the density of soil is 2.87 x 10−4 lbs/cubic inch, what is its density in kg/L?
(1lb = 454 g; 1 in3 = 16.387 064×10−6 m3; 1m3 = 103 L) (5)

(c) The quantity of water flowing continuously for one day at the rate of one
cusec is known as cusec day. Convert 1 cusec day into Acre-ft. (5)

Question No 4. (15)
Given a compact watershed in the Atlanta, Georgia, area that is two-thirds row crop
and one-third pasture, is 2500 ft long, is 210 ac, has a slope of 0.05, has no ponds or
wetlands, is in soil group C, is in good hydrologic condition, and is terraced, has
antecedent rainfall condition 2, compute the runoff depth in MKS and English units.
The precipitation is 100 mm.
Question No 5. (25)
(a) Calculate the annual soil loss for the given location and specific conditions.

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana, US

Soil Particle size parameter (silt + very fine sand) = 45%; Sand = 15%
Soil Structure code = Medium or coarse granular
Soil Permeability class = Moderate to rapid
Slope length = 110 m
Field slope = 8%
Organic Matter = 2%
Crop cover management factor (C) = 0.18
The conservation practice in the field is alternate strip of corn and small grain. Also,
field has no terraces.
(b) For the same location and field conditions, calculate single-storm soil loss for 5-year
return period. The value of C is given for this scenario is 0.41.
