※ This guidebook is based on information acquired as of December 2014.

What We Look for in Good Accommodations :

We collected information from guesthouses for foreign tourists and hanok guest houses which have acquired
a designation certificate from each district office in Seoul (as of August 31, 2014), hotels, and motels via
telephone and written surveys. We have also incorporated opinions from an advisory committee consisting
of specialists in hotels and tourism, humanities, hanok architecture, and interior design, as well as onsite
investigations by reporters. Finally, accommodations with special stories have been selected based on a com-
prehensive evaluation in terms of historic significance, the background of owners, spatial uniqueness, and
cultural and artistic value.

▶ The Guesthouses Introduced in This Guidebook are Designated as ‘Guesthouses for Foreign
Tourists.’ What Are They?
Introduced on January 1, 2012, the scheme allows non-Korean tourists to experience life in an ordinary
household in Korea’s urban areas by offering lodging services.
▶ The Hanok Guesthouses Introduced in This Guidebook are Designated as ‘Hanok guesthouses’
What Is It?
Hanok guesthouses refers to an establishment that offers tourists an opportunity to use all things Korean, eat
Korean food, or learn about Korean culture within a hanok building, defined as a structure whose main frame
consists of wood with a traditional tiled roof that reflects Korea's traditional aesthetics. The establishment
must have all the appropriate facilities to offer traditional cultural experience programs. The scheme was first
introduced on October 7, 2009.

If you walk straight from Anguk Station exit number 4, called Un-

The host of Eugene House has collected antique furniture one by one,

Look into Times and People Healthy and Organic Hanok

Through Hanok
Hanok is built with stones and wood. Pillars, rafters, doors, and grand
wooden floors are built of wood and timer, walls are made of straw
and clay, and windows are applied with traditional paper made of
natural wood. Floors are covered with traditional paper and applied
with soybean oil, which also has a water-proofing effect, to make the
surface glossy.
Most universal houses had tiled and thatched roofs. Rich houses use
tiled roofs, and ordinary households had thatched roofs made of straw.
Thatched roofs were widely used because of the benefit of keeping
heat inside during the winter, whereas they block strong heat from the
sun and protect against rain during the summer.

Bukchon Hanok Village

In the 1920s and 1930s, huge areas of land were divided into small
sized land sites, upon which many Hanok were built. This happened
in areas called Samcheong-dong, Gahoe-dong, and Gye-dong, parts
of which have come together to form the Bukchon Hanok Village. With
the wind of modernization, some houses keep the style of traditional
Hanoks, combined with modern styles by adapting glass doors at their
grand wooden floors, and fitting galvanized sheets at the eaves.
Preserving the beauty of the 8 sceneries of Bukchon, Bukchon Hanok
Village became a must-see spot, embracing with warmth and kind-
ness the people with different names and from different times of this
country—from the Joseon Dynasty, Empire of Korea, to the Republic
of Korea.

Stay Korea My Hongdae Guesthouse
The 13 year-old Stay Korea is run by a host, Lee Seonyeong.
She met her husband when she stayed in France. She then travelled
back to Korea and opened a guesthouse because she loves meeting
people. The host is fluent in English and French after living in Paris for
15 years. With this background, the guesthouse is well connected to
French guests. They told us a very special story of one French guest
who gave them a unique impression. Most of their guests had smiley
and satisfactory faces as travelers, but this very guest was somewhat
different.
The guest said that a French family adopted her when she was

to see her mom, so she helped the guest to find her mom, and in the

more involved in helping those adopted in foreign countries find their
families in Korea, with the help of Holt Children’s Service.
On a wall in the living room, densely posted letters from former
