▶ The Guesthouses Introduced in This Guidebook are Designated as ‘Guesthouses for Foreign
Tourists.’ What Are They?
Introduced on January 1, 2012, the scheme allows non-Korean tourists to experience life in an ordinary
household in Korea’s urban areas by offering lodging services.
▶ The Hanok Guesthouses Introduced in This Guidebook are Designated as ‘Hanok guesthouses’
What Is It?
Hanok guesthouses refers to an establishment that offers tourists an opportunity to use all things Korean, eat
Korean food, or learn about Korean culture within a hanok building, defined as a structure whose main frame
consists of wood with a traditional tiled roof that reflects Korea's traditional aesthetics. The establishment
must have all the appropriate facilities to offer traditional cultural experience programs. The scheme was first
introduced on October 7, 2009.

by a host. Even traditional sweet tea would be served.
Korean classical music is characterized by its transcendence, yet
it also clearly expresses Koreans' jovial nature of the Korean spirit.
Korean classical instruments and Hanok built with natural materials
such as earth, rocks, and trees come together in perfect harmony. The
sounds vibrate throughout the Hanok. The guesthouse host organizes
small and large performances to heighten awareness of the beauty of
Korean classical music.
You can watch the host perform alongside her three sons who
major in the geomungo, daegeum, and piri or catch the monthly per-
formance by a Korean classical band. The whole neighborhood joins
in the merrymaking. Shake your shoulders to the beat while enjoying
the dishes prepared by the guesthouse host and you will find yourself
already immersed in the Korean atmosphere.

positive reviews from the guests who stayed here over the years. Why
do travelers from all over the world find sopoong guesthouse so in-
triguing?
What makes Sopoong stand out from the rest is not its exterior
or size - It is from a host calling himself a 'generalist' which means
someone who are interested in many fields. He has travelled around
120 cities in over 30 countries and tells his guests about the his-
tory and culture of those places based on his profound knowledge of
things. Guests can sit around ondol room(a room where temperature
is controlled by Korea floor heating system), drink tea harvested at
Jirisan Mountain, and have a chat with the guesthouse host or go on
a tour around Bukchon.
Treating his guesthouse as a hub of cultural activities rather than
a typical lodge, the host spends his days promoting the unique senti-
ment of Korean culture. The great generalist at Sopoong guesthouse

Through Hanok
Hanok is built with stones and wood. Pillars, rafters, doors, and grand
wooden floors are built of wood and timer, walls are made of straw
and clay, and windows are applied with traditional paper made of
natural wood. Floors are covered with traditional paper and applied
with soybean oil, which also has a water-proofing effect, to make the
surface glossy.
Most universal houses had tiled and thatched roofs. Rich houses use
tiled roofs, and ordinary households had thatched roofs made of straw.
Thatched roofs were widely used because of the benefit of keeping
heat inside during the winter, whereas they block strong heat from the
sun and protect against rain during the summer.

autumn, Kim Suchan invited students from a remote island to stay in
My Hongdae to let them spend time with travellers from around the
world and to look around the nice spots in Seoul. The Space Sharing
Project is operated by funds saved from one US Dollar each day from
a one-day accommodation fee, which has a special purpose in itself.
That means that staying one day in this guesthouse is in part
paying for a good project. Love, Culture, Share is practiced so the

Urbanwood guesthouse near Hongik University is a place where
urban chicness and nature’s mildness come together. The lodging
space, composed of three rooms, has its interior and furnishings de-
signed based on the colors of Seoul’s four seasons. For instance, the
‘Dewy Meadow’ room imitates the green fields of Sunyudo in spring,
using light green colors, and the ‘Golden Field’ room, which is a dou-
ble room, renders calves on a golden field with orange colors. On
entering the rooms and surrounding themselves with natural colors,
the guests immediately feel at home, even if the full meaning of the
