In addition to playing the excerpts alone, learning this repertoire in a trumpet scetion can help players more-quickly develop skills in transposition, wning, lend and falanee: all of which are necessary in mastering the repertory of the professional orchestra In my 35 yeats of university teaching, I have been continually frustrated by the lack of completeness and notation accuracy in the commonly-used orchestral excerpt books for trumpet Naturally, using complete orchestral parts is generally more reliable but is not always practical — Specially when each student is assigned all of the trumpet parts of patticular work. HME's ‘levision to publish Essential Orchestral Excerpts comes from this frusteation. Jean-Christophe Dobrzelewski, one of my talented graduate teaching assistants (2002-4) completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Arizona State University and based much of his soon the study and editing of orchestral excerpts. His dissertation, The Most Requested Tumpet Excerpts From The Orchestral Repertoire, include the compilation, editing, and notation Af important teumpet and cornet passages from 137 orchestral works. He chose these works ecatce of their frequency in orchestra auditions, concert performances, and overall difficulty. My (eelente and T carefully proofread cach excerpt, and they are presented here as accurately as is possible. Due to the difficulty and length of time needed to acquire Tigenses for reprinting mu uly under copyright, not all works in Dr, Dobrrelewski's clissertation are included in TIM {TL volumes of excerpts. HME will publish additional volumes of important works as licenses | would like to thank Mr, Derek Reaban for his: work in compiling the histarieal listings of principal trumpet players and cusrent trumpet section rosters af amaty af the leauing anelstins vowel the world. fn addition, F would like fo acknowledge Mr. Gary Leopold for providing i itlected bibliography of articles conceming, orchesteal trumpeters, trumpet sections, and other finmpet-related topics. Each volume contains a portion of the materials provided by these pentlemen, David R. Hickman Regents’ Professor of Trumpet Arizona State University Fowhere he sted ie Aubier at the by. Jean-Christophe Dobrzelewski was born in Costa Rica and grew up in Swit trnnipet-with Jean-Frangois Michel and Vanea Samonikov. In 1997, he joined the class of Tory of Rueil-Malmaison in Paris and graduated in 2000 with a Prix and Highest Hawn paring sinter lattnve, Dobrzelewski was a prize winner in the International Trumpet Competition “Selnwe Pais.
