Application Note

Grounding Apparatus for SFRA Testing

Introduction
This application note explains how to ground apparatus before performing
SFRA testing in order to prevent damage to the SFRA instrument.

Audience
This application note is intended for anyone who performs SFRA testing with
Doble SFRA test instruments.

Why Grounding Is Necessary

Doble's SFRA test instruments use a low-voltage source and sensitive
measurement circuitry to perform tests. The instruments’ inputs are protected,
and the instruments check for excessive voltage on the apparatus before
starting a measurement. However, transformers can store and collect residual
energy that might not be detected. This can happen even with transformers that
have been out of service. Therefore, it is important to drain all stored energy
from the transformer before each test and to ensure to the extent possible that
external sources of energy are not imposed on the transformer or measurement
inputs during the test.
To avoid damage to the SFRA test instrument, follow the grounding procedure
provided in this note.

Procedure
Always apply temporary static-discharge grounds each time the SFRA test
leads are connected, disconnected, or moved. Connect the grounds to (1) the
bushings that the SFRA test clips will be applied to, and (2) the bushings to be
shorted or unshorted.
To ground apparatus for SFRA testing:
1. Open the switches to de-energize the transformer and disconnect it from
the associated buswork.

2. Ground the transformer on both sides.
