Why do we assess?
To monitor student progress: provide both teachers and students feedback concerning progress towards lesson
objectives and long term goals.
Making instructional decisions: teachers plan tasks to develop students' understanding and must have information
about how students are thinking and what ideas they are using or developing.
Evaluating students achievement: the process of determining the worth of or assigning a value to something on the
basis of careful examination and judgement.
Evaluating programs: assesment data should be used as one component in answering the question.
