AE8010— FATIGUE AND FRACTURE

Date: Time: 1.5 Hours

Year & Sem: IV&VII Total Marks : 50

PART – A 5 x 2= 10 Marks

1. What is fluctuating stress?

2. What is an SN curve? Explain the significant points in the curve.
3. Define Fatigue Damage
4. Discuss the miner’s cumulative damage theory
5. What is Rain flow counting?

PART – B 2 x 13 = 26 Marks

1. Explain with sketch “Goodman and Soderberg” methods for combination of stresses and
how it is useful in design. (OR)

Bending stress in a structural member fluctuates between a tensile stress of 280 MPa and
compressive stress of 140 MPa. What should be the minimum ultimate stress for the
member to carry this fluctuation? Assume the factor of safety to be 2 and the endurance
strength to be 50% of the ultimate strength of the material?

2. Explain Coffin – Manson theory.

(OR)
Explain the terms cyclic strain hardening and softening with a sketch.

PART – C 1 x 14 = 14 Marks

1. Explain the cycle counting method with suitable sketches.

(OR)

Write short notes on

(i)Stress concentration
(ii)Notch Sensitivity
(iii)Endurance Limit
(iv)Endurance Strength
