• Mission
– To maintain Space Domain Awareness, and to develop,
deliver and assure space-based capabilities in order to
enable the Joint warfighter at home and abroad.

achieving the objectives laid identified in SSE

Enhanced Satellite Communications Project – Polar (ESCP-P)

PROJECT SCOPE:

• To provide secure, reliable, and high-availability Beyond Line-Of-Sight (BLOS)


wideband and narrowband communications for domestic and continental
operations in the Arctic.

Polar Epsilon 2 (PE2) – SSE #45, 67, 71, 83, 84, 85 & 109

PROJECT SCOPE:

• To provide two ground stations and a processing facility to exploit the upcoming
RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM). PE2 will primarily use RCM imagery
provide maritime domain awareness. PE2 will also provide imagery for
intelligence purposes.

Medium Earth Orbit Search & Rescue (MEOSAR)
– SSE #55 & #85
PROJECT SCOPE:

• To provide two ground stations in Canada (AB and NL) and 22 MEOSAR
repeaters for implementation on the US GPS III satellite constellation. This will
augment ground stations and space segment repeaters provided by other Parties
and Participants of the international COSPAS-SARSAT Programme

• Award contract for space segment implementation (22 repeaters); anticipated in

Defence Enhanced Surveillance from Space Project (DESS-P)
– SSE #45, #67, #68 & #85
PROJECT SCOPE:

• To ensure the long-term provision of active wide area surveillance and enhance
intelligence capabilities from space, beyond those provided by the RADARSAT
Constellation Mission (RCM), whose design life will be met in 2026.

NEXT STEPS:

• Gain Defence Capability Board project approval to begin Options Analysis (June
2019), including project High Level Mandatory Requirements
• Determine synergies and distinct requirements with the Earth Observation – Data
Continuity (EO-DC) project being led by the Canadian Space Agency on behalf of
the GC

Surveillance from Space 2 (SofS 2)
– SSE #45, #83, #84, #85 & #86
PROJECT SCOPE:

• To enable the observation of space objects and the accurate assessment of their
orbital positions. SofS 2 will enable the protection and defence of Canadian and
allied space assets by contributing to the U.S. Department of Defense Space
Surveillance Network and further enhancing allied Space Situational Awareness.

NEXT STEPS:

• RFI in effect until Jan 2020


• Aiming to enter Definition Phase in Fall 2020
• PMO is currently evaluating options to advance IOC
