EMOS a Dangerous Subculture for Society

The subculture of Emo´s is very dangerous for society as it affects the emotion
feelings and behavior of people. This subculture is very popular in young people
between 12 and 18 years old. In the past years there have been some negative
events that created awareness in adults as their children are getting involved in
harmful practices. Emo is a combination “From the punk rock and the hardcore
tendencies”. The roots of this subculture come from Washington in the middle of the
80s, where music bands were created. Sadness and love are two feelings that
characterize this type of music. They also give a sense of guilty very similar to the
rock genre now days. From the 90s the Emo sub-culture is developing, becoming
more popular every day. In my opinion this is a very dangerous subculture as it is
belief by physiologists that it affects the health and the life of young people.

The Emo sub-culture started in the middle 80s in Washington from punk
music. In the 90s the Emo´s become a fashion trend, as in that time most music
genre´s were directed to political aspects. For this reason, when Emo artists turned
to a more personal introspective direction, leading to a great number of followers. In
the 2000s the style changed from normal music to a fashionable dressing style. A
result of this change, negative actions started to be seen like whiners and wrist
cutters. This problem is dangerous because in severe cases teens get sick and could
cause them health problems that could lead to death. In some cases, it just affects
the relation of this person with people around. The life of this young boy will not be
normal, socially discriminated and classified as a strange person.

At the beginning, Emo´s dressed up mainly for hardcore music. Most of the
Emo´s describe themselves as a way of getting involves with their emotional side.
First appearing as music and then as a clothing style. The Emo sub-culture is one of
the most popular and fashionable trends in many places around the world. It has
become a way of life for many people. An important fact is that many psychologists
describe them as introvert people, most of them being apart from society. Moreover,
young people are vulnerable to become Emo´s and start doing negative activities
that affect their way of living. The main reason for people at a young age excluding
themselves from society and friends is the lack of guidance from school, but
especially from parents.

The problem that normal people turn in to Emos affects society as a whole.
When they follow this subculture, it is difficult for parents to take care of there
children involved in these practices. In this case, the school is also affected as
children have other priorities in their life. Children development and success at
school is difficult, there is no interest to study and work hard for the future.
Teenagers who only care about their emotions and are not guided in life, affects
school result. The most common to happen is relation problems, as they are likely to
end up.

As I mentioned before, it is normal that Emos lose friends caused by the

introverted personality. Yet, these people express their emotions committing
suicides in rituals, and leaving all problems behind for a future in a better world.
Thus, the problem rises for society, as there will be people not educated, with any
manners, believing only in their own culture and satisfying only their needs. There
will not be solidarity between each other, and people will only care about themselves.
“Before some months two 14-year-old girls horrified the society, cutting ritually their
veins. The motto that they believed in was „The kitchen, the knife, the veins, end of the
problems!” (Paytasheva, 2015) From the quote above we can see the horror of teenagers
that commit terrifying acts and affect society.

A common Emo is described as a person who uses dark clothing; faces are chalky white,
eyes and lips black, and they have their own hairstyles that represent them. There are web
pages where groups of this sub-culture share their experiences doing self-harm staff that
affects the health of these teenagers. “The internet has many sites dedicated to Emo
fashion (dyed black hair brushed over your face, layering, black, black, black), Emo
bands (Green Day, My Chemical Romance), Emo conversation (sighing, wailing,
poetry).” (Sands, 2006). This type of communicates is dangerous for adolescents as the
conversations they hold with strange people might have negative consequences regarding
the security of the child. The Internet is always a threat for young people who don’t
understand the danger they can be expose to when they are using online communication.
The problem here is the security and integrity of the person as strange people can take
them. Emo´s do this type of things in order to relate with people that have similar ideas,
because with normal people they are unable to relate.

The main problem in this subculture is that young people and teenagers from
12-18 years are falling in this dangerous way of living. The problem presented is
difficult to solve, as it is not a common problem like alcohol and cigarettes which
most teenagers experience when they become teenagers. The problem here is that
the practices done by Emo´s affect people emotionally leading to extreme
consequences like suicides. A very common practice done by this innocent young
people is cutting their veins. They take the knife from the kitchen, or the scissors
from the school to do this dangerous practice. They decide to do this type of actions
to get rid of all the problems they have in life. If we see this problem from the
physiological side, it is clear that most of the reasons come from school situations
where other kids emotionally affect children. When the school doesn´t mange these
situations carefully, or parents are not interested in their children problems at
school, most teens take decisions that heal them from all situations.

To continue, when people are addressed to this type of practices there are
some beliefs that explain their actions. They belief they will be regenerated and they
will go to a better world. In my opinion, the behavior of the children who start
following this type of cultures is because of the ignorance and the lack of attention
from the parents to their children. Many children take the decisions by there own,
without the guidance of their parents, they choose to take paths that lead them to

wrong places. Therefore, the guidance of the parents, giving them support at least
during the period of teens until they turn 18 is important so they become a
resemblance of his or her parents.

In conclusion, the Emo subculture is a problem society is facing now a days, as

there are many teenagers that like this way of living. We can blame parents, as they are
responsible of educating their children and training them for life. It is clear that the
practices done by emo´s affect the health of people whom mange to do this type of stuff.
Cutting their wrist, making tattoos, piercings, and opening strange things in the skin
affects the body of young children who are still developing and have a long life ahead. If
we see this problem only from the side of the music, we can say that it doesn’t affect the
development of teenagers that want to do something with their life.

Thus, when children start dressing, behaving, and feeling emotionally like Emos
is when the problem starts affecting society. Normal young people, normal means
children educated by their parents, attending to school and living a regular live with no
problems. These young people need to be the opposite of an Emo, whose attitude towards
life is negative, believing that everything is bad and awful and having strange behaviors.
For this reason, a solution would be change the tendency of these people from negativism
to positivism, and protecting children from getting involved in these groups. So in these
order of ideas parents and the school should promote activities that benefit young
children their health and relation in the society. These activities may include sports,
playful activities and education for life.
