The main purpose of captions is to help reader understand information that may
not be in the text. And caption is also inform the basic information of some object
or picture. Object and picture maybe has a personal meaning, but doesn’t look so
particularly. So that, the importance of using the caption is to explain information
about the image or object and its intent, so it’s not to be misinterpreted.

Communicative purpose is a goal in the form of text orientation that leads to


communicative aspects to the reader. Each text is intended to be able to build
communication between the content of the text and its readers.

In the case of this text caption, communicative goals are achieved through the
use of communicative words such as inviting readers to think, interact and so on.
Caption text with communicative aspects is usually used for commercial,
persuasive, and other orientation purposes that require two-way communication.

phrase.

highlighting the main theme of the sub-

The caption only mentions about subject in
the picture.
CUTLINE
This caption mentions about who are the
subjects in the picture or photos and what
activity they do.
SUMMARY
Full explanation about subject, activity, time
detail, location detail and why it’s happened.
EXPANDED
Longer version of summary caption. This also
include how the event occurred.
QUOTE
Consist of someone’s word which has been
quoted related to the picture or photos.

Used to identify when subjects are more than
one.
CRITERIA OF WRITING A
GOOD CAPTION
• The captions should match the images.
The caption must match the image. So, the meaning will not change. For example, don't give
happy caption to sad picture.
 
• The captions should add new information.
A good caption will contain information that has not been included in the section, without
detailing what is already obvious.
 
• The captions should provide context for the picture.
A caption should have context, like a description or sentence that support or add clarity.

• The captions should brief or shorter.


Captions should be concise, brief, dense and clear. We can use conversational language that is
more concise and easy for readers to understand, to get the information conveyed in the
caption.
• The captions should draws attention.
A good caption will contain facts, accurate information and attract the reader's attention.
 
• Use present tense to creates a sense of immediacy and impact.
If possible, use the present tense, so that the reader can feel the current impression and
impact.
 
• Always identify the main people in the photograph.
In the caption, you should always identify the main person or object in the picture or photo. 
 
• The caption should provide a description if there are many people in the picture.
If there are several people in the picture, then in writing the caption, we can give the word 'left,
from left, right, or from right'.
