1. Definition
A caption, also known as a cutline, is a text that appears be low an image. Most captions
draw attention to something in the image that is not obvious, such as its relevance to the text.
Captions can consist of a few words of description, or several sentences. Along with the title,
lead, and section headings, captions are the most commonly read words in an article, so they
should be succinct and informative.
Captions also include a short title or heading of an article in a magazine or newspaper.
Words shown on a cinema or television screen to establish the scene of a story are also called
captions. Captions can also be inserted below/above charts, figures, graphics and tables.
There are several criteria for a good caption. A good caption clearly identifies the subject
of the picture without detailing the obvious. It is succinct. It establishes the picture's relevance
to the article, provides context for the picture, and draws the reader into the article.

- To explain what is shown in a picture/illustration
- To identify the subject of the picture
- To describe what is shown in a picture
- To help the reader understand information that may or may not be in the text

- Action/event/activity
- People/thing that involved
- Condition

4. Language Feature
- Noun phrase for a thing, a person, an animal, a location, etc. which is focused on, with or
without a, the, this, those, my, their, etc.
- Verb phrase dealing picture/photograph/graph/chart
- Spelling, punctuation and handwriting

6. Rules and How to Write Caption


Rules of writing Caption:
- Supply specific information (answering 5W1H)
- Use present tense on the first sentence
- Caption are written in a complete sentences
- Clearly identify the people and location in the photo
- Identify the person from left to right

How to write caption:


1. Observe the picture or video you will give the caption
2. Find out the message that will be sent from the picture before you write caption
3. Write sentence or phrase under the picture
7. Tips to Write Captions
- Do not begin with the words a, an, or the
- Use present tense to describe action in a photo
- Give readers information they cannot get from just looking at a photo
- A caption should complete the photo. The reader should not have to look at the story, but
should want to look at the story
- Write captions so they go from specific to general or general to specific
- Do not begin a caption with names
- When identifying members of a group, write "from left," not "from left to
right
- "Above" and "pictured here" are unnecessary
- Captions should not repeat information contained in the lead
- Name people only if they are important to the picture
