TUJUAN PEMBELAJARAN :
 Menganalisis fungsi sosial, struktur dan unsur kebahasaan teks caption
informasi terkait gambar/foto /tabel/grafik/ bagan.

 Menangkap makna kontekstual terkait fungsi sosial, struktur dan ciri

kebahasaan serta makna isi tersurat, tersirat dan rinci teks caption informasi
terkait gambar/foto /tabel/grafik/ bagan

 Menyusun teks caption informasi terkait gambar/foto /tabel/grafik/ bagan

dengan memperhatikan struktur, fungsi sosial dan ciri kebahasaan.
DEFINITION :

CAPTION also known as A CUTLINE, is a

text that appears below an image
(picture/photograph/table/graphic).
THE SOCIAL FUNCTION OF CAPTION : TO
GIVE DESCRIPTION, EXPLANATION OR
INFORMATION TO THE READERS ABOUT
WHAT IS ILLUSTRATED IN THE IMAGE.

Pattern Simple Present :
S + V1 For Subjects : I/ They/ We/You/ Subject Jamak
S + V1 s/es For Subjects : She/He/It/ Subject tunggal
CAPTION CONSISTS OF :
 1. Lead

It is the title of the caption. It can be a noun phrase or clause. Usually written in bold. Lead
usually consists of 2 – 3 words.
 2. Description

It is the body of the caption. It answers What, who, where, when, and how the event in the
illustration happened and gives information. Remember that the information in the description
is not the repetition of the lead. The information is written from specific to general information
or vice versa.
 CAPTION SHOULD BE
WRITTEN CONCISELY AND
USING INTERESTING
LEAD.
There are several criteria for a good caption. A good caption clearly identifies the subject of
the picture without detailing the obvious. It is succinct. It establishes the picture’s relevance
to the picture, provides context for the picture, and draws the reader into the message. So
related to the structure of a caption, it can be written in the form a word(s), phrase(s) or
sentence(s).
Caption yang baik tidak menyatakan apa yang sudah jelas ada di gambar. Melainkan memberi
informasi yang belum diketahui oleh pembaca.

2. GROUP
IDENTIFICATI
ON
Caption group identification hampir sama dengan
contoh caption identification bar. Hanya saja
subject berupa kelompok orang (2 orang atau lebih)

3. SUMMARY
Untuk jenis caption summary,
biasanya berisi penjelasan subjek
yang ada di gambar, kegiatan yang
dilakukan di dalam gambar tersebut,
waktu kejadian, lokasi kejadian dan
alasan mengapa kegiatan tersebut
dilakukan. (5 Wh Questions)

4. EXPANDED
Jenis caption expanded adalah
jenis caption yang paling
lengkap informasinya. Sesuai
dengan nama jenisnya, caption
text yang diperluas ini adalah
pengembangan dari teks
sebelumnya, terutama dari
caption summary.
(5 Wh Question + 1 How)

Biasanya tulisan caption

nya cukup panjang
hampir menyerupai
essay mini dan terdapat
kutipan (quote) di
dalamnya.
5. CUTLINE
Caption jenis cutline adalah
yang paling sering ditemukan
dalam gambar dan tulisan yang
tertera pada koran dan media
baik media offline ataupun
online. Caption cutline
menjelaskan subjek yang ada di
gambar dan apa yang sedang
dilakukan oleh subjek.
6. QUOTE
Quote caption berarti berisi
kutipan kalimat dari seseorang.
RULES TO WRITE CAPTION
FOR TABLE OR GRAPHIC.
 1. Be descriptive. This first rule is the most important. Tell the reader
exactly what is going on in the picture or figure. Why exactly are you
including this image? The reader should be able to answer that after
reading your caption.
 2. If you are describing a table or graph, talk about variables. What does each
side of the bar graph represent? Your reader should have enough
information from the caption, the key, and the graph to be able to
make sense of it without reading your paper.
 3. Keep it concise.
 4. Remove anything that isn’t strictly necessary.
 5. Cite your source under the graph or table if it comes from somewhere else.

Write captions (lead and description) for your various photographs (3 photos) .
1. Find good interesting photographs
2. Print them on hvs then write different kind of captions by hand neatly below each images.
3. Write KELAS_NAMA LENGKAP_WRITING CAPTION on top of your paper.
4. Submit the hard copies of your work directly to the teacher.
