Building Seismic Adaptation

-400 glass windows, 1000 of crushed

-Transamerica Pyramid concrete
-clever engineering to protect
-monitoring devices through building
-accelerometer: measure movement
-pyramid ship: (fat base) low center of
gravity
-massive steel skeleton/framework
-steel base for extra strength/additional
basing
-another layer around interior
-30,000 ton concrete and steel anchor
-even in magnitude 7.8 earthquake
-more technology inside the building

Golden Gate Bridge -deep foundation is 20 meters deep below
the solid rock reaching bed rock.
-concrete bases, surrounded those
foundations
-concrete blocks reach deep into banks
-they anchor the two main anchors that hold
up bridge
-steel wire: cables sturdier and flexible

__________________________________ __________________________________
Oakland Hom Bay Bridge -huge steel cable so that it can swing freely
with the earthquake
-center tower is made of 4 vertical steel
pylon that make up each tower which adds
flexibility
-horizontal beams between pylons which
are flexible connecting to stop tower from
collapsing
-crumple zone
-road is split into sections
-bridge deck has hollow beams that holds
the section of bridge
-when segments hit that bridge the segment
will move independently. They will expand
and contract to absorb the force

Homes- Mission Bay -long pilings clusters hammer through mud
and rubble deep enough until reaching
bedrock
-on top of clusters there are concrete caps
which increases the surface area
-the caps are connected by concrete
stretches
-another layer of concrete for increased SA
-large enough surface area that is stable so
that we can build on top of it

Caldecott Tunnel -built in segments lined with concrete
modules and coated in rubber to move
against each other allowing flexibility so it
doesn't break when the ground around it
moves
-One section is filled with concrete
-Then lined with mesh spray concrete and
install platforms and tracks

Extra Notes Creep meter: measures amount of creep.

How much tension is building up in the fault.
Measures how far its been pulled
Liquefaction-liquify
