Issue:
When trying to delete a layer in a drawing in AutoCAD, the following message displays and
the layer is not deleted: 
 
The selected layer was not deleted.
The following layers cannot be deleted:
 Layer 0 and Defpoints
 The current layer
 Layers containing objects
 Xref-dependent layers

Solution:
 
You will not be able to delete a layer if there are objects on the layer or if objects are
referencing the layer. If you are confident that there are no such objects, use the LAYDEL
command to delete the layers:
1. Enter LAYDEL on the command line.
2. Click Name or enter N.
3. Select the Layer and click OK to delete it.
Blocks can also stop a layer from being deleted. Even if blocks are deleted from model or
paper space, their definitions are still in the drawing. A layer that the block or definition is on
will stay "used" until all blocks and their definitions are deleted and purged.
