INTRODUCTION
Light-Fidelity
LI-FI is transmission of data through illumination, sending
data through a LED light bulb that varies intensity faster than
human eye can follow.
Light based WI-FI
Light is used instead of radio-waves to transmit information
LiFi is designed to use LED light bulbs similar to those
currently in use in many energy-conscious homes and offices.

HISTORY
 Professor Harald Haas, from the University of Edinburgh in the UK, is
widely recognised as the original founder of Li-Fi.
 He coined the term Li-Fi and is Chair of Mobile Communications at the
University of Edinburgh and co-
founder of pure lifi.

Haas promoted this technology in his 2011 TED
Global talk and helped start a company to market it.
In October 2011, companies and industry groups
formed the Li-Fi Consortium, to promote high-speed
optical wireless systems.
The first Li-Fi smartphone prototype was presented at
the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas from
January 7–10 in 2014.

REAL TIME USAGE OF LIFI

PRESENT SCENARIO

1.4 MILLION 5 MILLION

PRESENT SCENARIO

 Radio Spectrum is congested but the demand for

wireless data double each year .Every thing, it seems
want to use wireless data but the capacity is drying
up.

 So what can carry this excess demand in the future.

 Drawbacks - Capacity, Availability, Security & Efficiency

RADIO SPECTRUM ISSUES
Capacity
 Cost and Expensive

 Less Bandwidth compared to other spectrums

 Insufficient spectrum for increasing data

 Efficiency
 Millions of base stations consume huge amount of energy for
 Transmitting the radio waves
 To cool the base station cabins

RADIO SPECTRUM ISSUES

 Availability
 Available within the range of Base stations
 Limited availability
 Unavailable in aircrafts

 Security
 Less secure(passes through the walls)

VISIBLE LIGHT COMMUNICATION

RADIO INFRARED VISIBLE Ultraviolet Gama

Rays X- Rays
WAVES RAYS RAYS Rays

 Gama rays can’t be used as they could be

dangerous.

X-rays have similar health issues.

VISIBLE LIGHT COMMUNICATION
Ultraviolet light is good for place without
people, but otherwise dangerous for the human body.

Infrared, due to eye safety regulation, can only be

used with
• low power.
• HENCE WE LEFT WITH THE ONLY THE
VISIBLE - LIGHT SPECTRUM.

HOW LI-FI WORKS

3/31/2018 LIFI-LIGHT FIDELITY 17

WORKING PROCESS
Operational procedure is very simple, if the led is on, you
transmit a digital 1, if its off you transmit a 0. The LEDs can be
switched on and off very quickly, which gives nice opportunities
for transmitting data. Hence all that us required is some LEDs
and a controller that code data into those LEDs. .
Thus every light source will works as a hub for data
transmission .

3/31/2018 LIFI-LIGHT FIDELITY 18

WORKING PROCESS
On one end all the data on the internet will be streamed to a
lamp driver when the led is turned on the microchip
converts the digital data in form of light .

A light sensitive device (photo detector) receives the signal

and converts it back into original data. This method of
using rapid pulses of light to transmit information
wirelessly is technically referred as Visible Light
Communication .

LI-FI BASED PRODUCT
• Serves as a connector to external link like DSL.

• Covers a radius of about 20 meters

• The transmission speed is 100 Mbps.
LI-FI ROUTER
• Suitable for small office or home use
3/31/2018 LIFI-LIGHT FIDELITY 21
APPLICATIONS
Li-fi can be used in –
sensitive areas such as aircrafts for data without causing interference

Places where it is difficult to lay optical operation theaters

Traffic scenarios, thereby reducing accidents
Underwater applications where radio waves cannot propagate.

Industries like petrochemical plants, nuclear power plants , petrol pumps etc

POTENTIAL APPLICATION OF LI-FI
TRAFFIC LIGHT
Traffic lights can communicate to the car and with
each other. Cars have LED-based
headlights, and cars can
communicate with each
other and prevent accidents.

Intrinsically Safe Environment :
Visible Light is more safe than RF, hence it can be used in places where RF
can't be used such as petrochemical plants

AIRCRAFT
Whenever we travel through airways we face the problem in
communication media ,because the whole airways communication are
performed on the basis of radio waves. To overcome this drawback on
radiowaves , li-fi is introduced.

LECTURE/SEMINAR HALLS
• Interactive classroom with interconnected devicesThe
classroom will be more interactive with the real-time
interconnectivity between 500 devices
• Sharing views & queries with the entire class

3/31/2018 LIFI-LIGHT FIDELITY 27

ON OCEAN BEDS
• Li-Fi can even work under water where wi-fi fails
completely, thereby throwing endless opportunities
to navigation/military operations.

3/31/2018 LIFI-LIGHT FIDELITY 28

LIMITATIONS
 Light can't pass through objects .

 Interferences from external light sources like sun light, normal bulbs, and opaque
materials in the path of transmission will cause interruption in the communication.

 Li-Fi requires line of sight.

 High installation cost of the VLC systems .

 A major challenge facing Li-Fi is how the receiving device

will transmit back to transmitter.

CONCLUSION
The possibilities are numerous and can be explored further. If
this technology can be put into practical use , every bulb can
be used something like a Wi-Fi hotspots to transmit wireless
data.
