HANDING / TAKING OVER CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSORS TO / FROM

MAINTENANCE

PURPOSE:
To hand over centrifugal compressors for maintenance and taking over the same.

SCOPE:
This procedure is applicable to the Recycle Gas Compressors of Platformer, MC-AY231-
C01A/B, Isomar Recycle Gas Compressor MC- AY271-C01 and Tatoray Recycle Gas
Compressor MC- AY281-C01/51.

PROCEDURE:
The procedure for is divided into the following sections:

A Preparations for Hand over to Maintenance.

B Taking compressor back in line after maintenance

A PREPARATIONS FOR HAND OVER TO
MAINTENANCE.
1. Check whether the compressor has been shut down as *
per the SOP AROJ/PDN/231/3006 for Platforming
Recycle Gas Compressors, as per the SOP
AROJ/PDN/271/3005 for Isomar Recycle Gas
Compressors and as per SOP AROJ/PDN/281/3005 for
Tatoray Recycle Gas Compressor MC- AY281-C01/51.
2. Ensure that the isolation valves of the compressor * *
suction and discharge are closed.
3. Close the HIC-003 / 006 of Platforming Recycle Gas * *
Compressor, HIC-005 of Isomar Recycle Gas
Compressor, HIC-003 / 053 of Tatoray Recycle Gas
Compressor in MANUAL to 0% in the suction line. In
case of Platforming Recycle Gas Compressor, close the
spill-back line isolation valve and HIC-021 / 022 in
MANUAL to 0%.
4. Reverse the blind in the nitrogen line to open position. * *
5. Open the isolation valves in the compressor suction, * *
discharge and spillback lines to Ejector.
6. Open the nitrogen line isolation valve and pressurize * *
upto 5 Kg/cm2 (g). Purge the compressor casing,
suction, discharge and spillback lines to atmosphere
through the Ejector. Do not line up steam to the ejector
and subject the compressor to vacuum.
7. Purge the compressor casing / associated piping free of *

hydrogen / hydrocarbon by pressurizing and
depressurizing 3-4 times.
8. Check whether the casing and the associated piping * *
have been freed of hydrocarbon by taking an
explosimeter reading at low point drains. Purge until
the compressor has been completely freed of hydrogen
/ hydrocarbon.
9. Isolate the nitrogen buffer gas supply to the dry gas * *
seals only when the casing pressure comes down to the
ambient.
10. Close the isolation valve in primary dry gas seal line to * *
flare.
12. After stopping the compressor, continue lube oil *
circulation through Auxiliary lube oil pump till the lube
oil supply and return temperatures are the same.
13. In case of steam turbine driven lube oil pump, after *
stopping the pump isolate steam supply and back
pressure return line from the turbine by closing the
respective isolation valves.
13. Ensure that lube oil in the piping / compressor bearing *
housing / gear box / compressor-motor bearing housing
is drained lube oil tank.
14. De-energize electrical power supply for the following: * *
1. The main motor.
2. The auxiliary lube oil pump motor.
Oil reservoir electrical heaters.
15. Insert blinds in the following locations: * *
1. Steam supply and exhaust of the main lube oil
pump.
2. Suction of the compressor (Downstream of the
suction isolation valve).
3. Discharge of the compressor (Upstream of the
discharge valve).
4. Spillback line of Platformer recycle gas compressor
(Downstream of HIC).
5. Primary gas seal line to flare (Downstream of
isolation valve).
16. Isolate the cooling water supply and return to the lube *
oil coolers. Blind these tie-in points in case the coolers
have to be handed over for maintenance.
Drain the tube side free of water.
17. Now, the compressor can be handed over to *
maintenance.

B TAKING COMPRESSOR BACK IN LINE AFTER
MAINTENANCE
1. Remove all the inserted blinds as per the blind register. * *
2. Perform leak test on all the opened up flanges in the * *
process lines after pressurizing with nitrogen upto 3.0
Kg/cm2 (g).
3. Purge the isolated loop with nitrogen and free the loop *
of air. Check oxygen content (<0.3 Vol. %) before
taking in hydrogen into the compressor. Line up
Primary gas vent from dry gas seal and start nitrogen
though dry gas seal .
