LIS 319: INFORMATION SERVICE TO CHILDREN

Aims of the Course


The course aims to introduce students to the provision of the information services to
children by drawing examples from public and school libraries.

Objectives of the Course


On completion of the course, students should be able to:

1. understand children’s behavior and their information needs;


2. identify full range of children’s literature and materials; and
3. Plan and organize appropriate information services for children of different age
groups.

Course Content
 Introduction to children’s psychological development
 The role of libraries in junior schools
 Selection, acquisition and processing of children’s library materials
 Suitable environments for children to encounter books
 How children read, understand and explore ideas
 Developing children’s awareness and critical thinking
 Understanding children’s information needs
 Problems of reading habit of children
 Developing children’s information seeking behavior
 Acquisition of relevant literature for children according to their age groups
 Management and evaluation of children’s library materials
