The impact of Covid in the E-commerce and Tourism sector

Covid -19 is a virus that broke out in 2020. The first time this virus was discovered in
Wuhan, China and at least has infected many people and to more than 190 countries. Covid-
19 is caused by the evere Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) from
Corona Virus and attacks the human respiratory tract which causes humans to get respiratory
infections ranging from the common cold to more severe infections such as pneumonia, acute
respiratory syndrome or death). On March 2, 2020, 2 cases were confirmed in the Depok area,
Indonesia. As of 4 September 2020, Covid-19 cases in Indonesia have reached 187,537
people, even the government has designated Covid-19 as a national disaster. Common
symptoms for sufferers themselves include dry cough, fever, and easy fatigue. However, these
symptoms will usually appear within 2-14 days after contamination. When hands that are
contaminated with the virus touch the eyes, nose and mouth, this virus will very easily spread
into our bodies. Therefore, we must be diligent in washing our hands regularly and properly
using soap and water or a hand sanitizer, remember to use a mask when leaving the house.
Now, choosing at home is the best solution to break the chain of transmission of Covid-19.
Basically this virus reproduces by dividing and mutating frequently, therefore people who are
not obedient are very susceptible to this virus. The spread of Covid-19 has affected many
sectors in this country. There are some winning sectors that try to accomplish the bump of
demand, and there also some losing sectors that try to survive.

One of the sectors that gain much benefit is electronic commerce (e-commerce). This
business refers to buying and selling activities of goods and services based on the internet. E-
commerce makes transactions easier because it’s not required to do physical meet, the thing
that the whole world is minimizing now. The famous e-commerce in Indonesia is Shopee,
Tokopedia, Bukalapak, Lazada, Blibli, JD.Id, and many others.

Coronavirus pandemic has changed consumer behavior, people are forced to change
their physical buying and selling activities to e-commerce. From a UK article released by
Express, before pandemic only 8% of the age group are buying food online, but now, it’s
raised to 23%. This is really good news for e-commerce facing unfavorable pandemic
conditions.

From SCMP.com the orange famous e-commerce, Shopee gained 120 percent increase
in sales in Indonesia in the first three month of 2020. In this pandemic time, e-commerce is
more competing to attract their new users. By adding some promotions during this pandemic
such as National Online Shopping Day (Harbolnas), 8.8 event, free shipping and many more.

The first category products that have highly increased buying interest based on
katadata.co.id are healthy products, such as hand sanitizer increase 5585%, vitamin C 1986%,
hand soap 1395%, thermometer 1007% and surgical mask 167%. Second category that gains
significant increases is work from home equipment, such as webcam raises 1572% to be used
for meeting and online learning. The third category is hobby products, a bicycle trend that
makes demand & price in society exorbitant until it raises by 1036%. The last sector that gain
much increases is food and beverages.

On the other side, 2019 was a tough year for the tourism industry in the world,
including tourism in Indonesia. Covid-19 has a major impact on Indonesia, not only for
human health, but also for the economy. Tourism is an industrial sector that has been
negatively affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, such as restaurants, souvenir centers,
especially hotels. In Indonesia, hotels are the worst sector affected by pandemic. Due to the
increasing number of Covid cases, the tourism industry, including hotels, had to be
temporarily stopped. The government itself has issued a policy to handle the Covid-19 case,
“PSBB” (Pembatasan Sosial Skala Besar). This has a negative impact on the tourism industry,
especially hotels. In fact, even though the PSBB policy is no longer in effect, hotels in
Indonesia are still not able to operate normally and are still heavily affected by Covid-19. Due
to the lack of interest from the community to travel, most people prefer to maintain their own
health in a self-quarantine manner and do not want to take the risk of going on a tour.

It is recorded that around 1,226 hotels in Indonesia have closed due to the impact of
the Coronavirus, one of them is the Airy Rooms hotel. Airy Rooms announced the cessation
of its operations and business throughout Indonesia starting May 31, 2020. The CEO of Airy
Rooms said it was forced to stop all Airy operations due to market conditions that had almost
collapsed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and too heavy economic challenges.

The Covid-19 pandemic had a major impact on the world, especially Indonesia. It can
have an adverse impact such as an impact in the tourism industry or it can have a beneficial
impact such as in the field of e-commerce.
