2 Career Paths
1.1.2 Identify the scope of career opportunities

As the rest of my life starts to unfold around me it is time I start

thinking about my future career. I have many career opportunities that I can

strive for, but the career I would most thrive in would be a history teacher. I

would thrive in the position of a history teacher because I have the right

personality to teach a class. I also would thrive because I am working hard

to get the education I would need to become a history teacher. Lastly I

have studied the requirements of teachers and I believe that after college I

can fulfill the requirements.

My personality is the first thing I considered when I started to ask

myself what I wanted to spend the rest of my life working with. I came up

with one constant answer, history. Ever since I learned about the

mezoamerican civilizations I have been infatuated with history and anyone

who would give me the opportunity to talk to them about history would get

an earful. Teaching came to be a natural progression from there, and my

research expelfied it because I took the career cluster survey and teacher

and administrator was one of the careers listed (3.2.1). That was not the

only test I took, I also took the Myers Briggs personality test and I got the

campaigner. Reading through the description it matched me very well and

even stated, “This lends Campaigners a solid foothold in any human

science or service, from psychology, counseling and teaching to politics,

diplomacy and detective work” (3.2.3).

The education of teachers is important. In many states, like Ohio,

require a bachelor's degree in education to get a four year renewable

teachers license (3.2.5). That is the bare minimum to be able to teach a

classroom, so the degree earned for university is important. I have

researched into different colleges and universities, such as Xavier

university, which ranks in the top education departments (3.2.6). I have

seen the school and I have felt that it is a great choice for me after a visit to

the campus over the summer. Not only is college important, high school is

as well. That is why I have planned to and currentlying taking the teacher

academy course to prepare me for becoming a teacher one day because it

allows me to get valuable experience in a classroom while still being a

student. High school is also the stepping stone to college so I have elected

to work for a honors diploma, I am taking the SAT and the ACT, and a

member of the National Honor Society (3.2.2).

The requirements and training happen mostly in college but some

schools like to have experienced teachers, others just require a teaching

license (3.2.4). The teaching licensure itself is not a hard to license aquire,
for Ohio it is a four year license that requires a bachelor's degree. From

there the four year requirements are split, the first option requires an

approved program of teacher preparation program, to pass examinations

from the State board of education, and twelve hours of coursework. The

other option requires having a GPA of two and a half or higher, passing

examinations for the subject area to be taught, summer training by Teach

for America, and being assigned to teach for America as a participant in the

Teach For America program (3.2.5).

A teacher's life is never an easy one, and that ultimately the life I

want to live. I want to be able to teach about the greats of history and keep

their legacy alive. I want to tell the forgotten stories to a new generation. I

want to be able to change lives one lesson at a time, from Caesar crossing

the Rubicon river, to George Washington over the Delaware, I will carry on

their story. I will pass highschool with a teacher academy, I will take the

SAT and the ACT, I will get an honors diploma and join the NHS. After that

I will work hard in college to get my degree in education. I will find a school

to teach at that and live my best life. I will show each and every student I

have the energy I can bring into the classroom and how fun, mythical, and

interesting history can get. It will be hard but if I continue down the path I

have set for myself my dream will become a reality.
