3.2 Career Path

1.1.2 - Identify the scope of career opportunities and the requirements for education,

training, certification, licensure, and experience.

Through many experiences with children, I have decided to become a middle school

teacher, although there are several career opportunities I could go into in education. I have also

looked into numerous colleges and universities that have excellent post- secondary education

programs that would help me to earn a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education. The many self

assessments I have taken show certain qualities that would help me become a successful teacher.

My goal is to become a teacher to help students become successful.

There are different careers that I have considered going into, including elementary

teaching, administration, and special education (3.2.1). However, I have chosen to become an

elementary teacher. In order to become a teacher, I must get a Bachelor's in Secondary Education

and then I need to pass all required exams. Finally, I can earn a Teaching License in whatever

state I choose through that state's program. To get a teaching license in Ohio, I must have a

bachelor’s degree, pass examinations, use approved teaching preparation methods and have 12

hours of reading coursework (3.2.2). Along with getting a Bachelor’s in Education, I can get a

Bachelor’s is Special Education that would allow me to work as a Special Education teacher.

Although I have chosen to become an elementary teacher now, I have various other opportunities

that match with my interests and personality.

I have considered a number of educational options available after high school including

many colleges that have fantastic education programs that would help me to earn a teaching

license. After volunteering at an elementary school for a few years, I know that teaching is my

future. I plan to apply to several colleges and attend one of them in the Fall of 2022. One of those

colleges is Dixie State University. Their program would help me become a highly qualified

teacher (3.2.5). Another college that would help me become a teacher is Brigham Young

University (3.2.6). BYU and Dixie State University programs will give me classroom

experiences and exceptional classes. I have taken a number of AP classes in high school that will

help me to prepare for college including AP US History, AP Language and Composition, AP

Microeconomics, and AP Macroeconomics. I am also enrolled in Teacher Academy, a college

level class that prepares you for classroom experiences and college education programs. These

many education options will aid me in gaining a teaching license in the end.

I have taken several self-assessments to narrow down which level of education I want to

teach. I want to use my organizational skills and creativity to inspire students to become

whatever they desire. I want a chance to give back and help them become who they want to be

and have an impact on their future. I completed these self-assessment quizzes to determine my

skills and abilities. I am confident, organized, flexible, patient, disciplined and hardworking

(3.2.4). These skills are great for teaching because I can be authoritative without being

overbearing. I am skilled at reading others and reacting appropriately. Other qualities for

teaching that I possess are enthusiasm, respect, and reliability (3.2.3). These traits are good for

classroom management and dealing with stressful situations as a teacher.

I know I was meant to teach and I especially want to teach middle school. The college

education programs that I have looked into will help me earn a Bachelor’s in Secondary

Education. I have the traits and qualities that define a teacher and help in the classroom.

Education is in my future, no matter what part of the educational system I choose.
