3.2 Career Paths

1.1.2 Identify the scope of career opportunities and the requirements for education,

training, certification, licensure, and experience.

To display my career path, I created a Prezi (Evidence 3.2.1) that takes you through my

plans all the way from high school to obtain a career in education. I reflect on the classes I have

taken in high school and the experiences I’ve had, which will benefit me as I pursue a college

degree in education. I list the colleges I have visited and those that I plan on visiting to possibly

attend. I explain what steps need to be taken to be able to get a teaching position, like what

degree I want to earn. My last and final stop is my dream teaching job; including where and what

I would like to teach.

At Olentangy High School, I began my path in pursuing my dream of becoming a

teacher. I have taken many classes that have allowed me to acquire traits that will help me in the

educational field. I have taken Honors Physical Science, Honors Biology, Honors Geometry, AP

English Language, AP Environmental, and most importantly Teacher Academy. I have also had

the opportunity to be a member of the girls lacrosse team at Olentangy High School which has

given me the opportunity to participate in hosting a kid camp that teaches little girls the sport of

lacrosse. The biggest part of my high school career that has majorly impacted my experience on

teaching is being a gymnastics coach for kids of ages 5 to 12. This has given me the opportunity

to understand the responsibility and other important traits to demonstrate when being a teacher in

a classroom (Evidence 3.2.2).

Being a junior in highschool, it is time to start thinking about where I want to go to

college to take on studying in the field of education. Junior year is a very important year to me

when it comes to thinking about what area I’d like to teach. You have to start taking the ACT,

which I plan on taking this October of 2019 and hope to receive a 29 by the time I graduate.

Sophomore year my sister and I got the chance to visit The University of Dayton, John Carol,

and Gannon. Some colleges I plan on visiting throughout the course of this year and next year

are Ohio University, Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, and Miami University of

Ohio. My dream school to attend is Ohio University where I plan to major in early childhood

education. The requirements for doing so are nothing I do not already have or cannot accomplish

(Evidence 3.2.3). While in college, I plan on gaining early experience at a local school near the

university for no less than 10 weeks so I can get the feel of what it is like to be in a classroom 7

days a week for 6 or 7 hours a day.

When I graduate college, I plan on having earned my Bachelors Degree and later on

working to get my Masters Degree. To get a teaching license in Ohio, there are many steps that

need to be taken. First you have to work to get your resident and alternative resident educator

license before you can receive your professional educator license (Evidence 3.2.4).

My last stop is my dream teaching job as an adult. I would love to teach elementary

school. I haven’t chosen which grade is best suited for me, however if I had to choose it would

be either third, fourth, or fifth grade. Even though you teach all subjects in elementary school as

a teacher, if I had to choose a subject to teach it would be math. I surveyed one of my favorite

teachers that I’ve had in the past, Mrs.Gestosani, and asked her some questions relating to

teaching, like how she pursued teaching as a career and how it affects her lifestyle (Evidence
3.2.5). Mrs.Gestosani said that being a teacher only benefits the rest of her life. She feels that it

allows for a great balance between her work and her family, which she said is most important to

her and as it is with me. Her greatest satisfaction in her career of teaching is being involved in

the community and helping students grow, which I feel like I can do with my desire of wanting

to help make change in schools.

It is never too early to start preparing for what is to come when you are older.

I feel that, only being a junior in highschool, I have already set a solid foundation for my future.

Knowing that I have wanted to be a teacher since I was little, I was able to go into highschool

knowing what classes I wanted to take that would benefit my future and expand my knowledge.

Having a set plan for my future and goals that I set for myself to reach, spikes my level of

motivation and determination which only leads to tremendous success.
