2: Career Paths
1.1.2: Identify the scope of career opportunities and the requirements for
education, training, certification, licensure, and experience.

To explain my chosen career path, I have created a Prezi (3.2.1) that follows my plans

from high school to a career in education. I have considered the classes I have taken or plan to

take in high school, which will benefit me most as I pursue a college degree in education. The

next thing I thought about is the degree I plan to pursue. The last portion of my plan considers

my dream teaching job.

During high school, I have taken many classes and participated in multiple clubs and

extracurricular activities that will help me prepare myself for college, and I have included this

information in my resume (3.2.2). By taking Teacher Academy and other Advanced Placement

courses, I will be well equipped for harder classes and possibly even get some out of the way

before I get to college. I have also gone on three college visits to Ohio State University,

University of Cincinnati and Ohio University, and I plan to visit Miami University.

After visiting the three previously mentioned schools, I have decided that Ohio State

University is my top choice. Ohio State University has numerous paths that can be taken in order

to pursue an education career (3.2.3). If OSU happens to not work out as I plan, and I enjoy it on

my visit, Miami University will be my second choice (3.2.4). While in college, I plan to major in

Secondary Education in order to fulfill my plans of becoming a high school teacher. When my

Teacher Academy class got to hear from teachers in our school, we learned a lot about degrees

and also about the different licenses you can get to become a teacher based on what you are

interested in teaching. After listening to the panel of teachers, I now know that I should plan on

getting my teaching license for grades 7-12 after graduating from college with a Bachelor’s
degree in Secondary Education (3.2.5). I know that in Ohio I will begin my career with a

Resident Educator license directly out of college (3.2.6), and I will then work towards earning

my Master’s +45.

My dream teaching assignment would be in a district similar to Olentangy. A suburban

school district in Ohio is where I would like to teach because I want to live in Ohio even after I

graduate from college, and I also like the atmosphere of the suburbs. I am still deciding what

subject I want to teach, but I would love to teach English or journalism in a high school. After

taking multiple self-assessments including personality, aptitude, interest and multiple

intelligences, I learned that I am categorized as the personality type “defender.” Being a defender

comes with the personality traits patient, loyal, hard-working and humble, which I think will help

me immensely as I pursue a teaching career. The personality tests also recommended that I

choose to teach as my future career (3.2.7).

Throughout my time as a Teacher Academy student, I have learned that there are many

different types of teachers and other professions such as administration, guidance, intervention

specialists, and curriculum directors (3.2.8). There are also many different paths people can take

to pursue a career in one of the previously listed occupations. I hope the classes I am taking and

the extracurriculars I am involved in help me prepare for college and that my plan for my future

career in education is successful.
