LET’S LEARN

Humans studying humans. This is the field of Anthropology. Unlike

other disciplines of the social sciences, anthropology promotes a holistic of
humans. It seeks to answer the primary question’ What does it mean to be
human?”This allows for an extensive and inclusive approach such that
anthropology studies human as both biological and social creatures
Biologically it inquires on the genetic composition of humans, their
relationship with other primates and their evolution. As a social science,
anthropology focuses on human diversity around the world. There are
other disciplines that study humanity. Biology studies the human
body, history studies the actions of past human cultures and
literature studies the writings of various people. However, each of
these disciplines provides only a small window of understanding into
the world of humanity. Anthropology combines these disciplines in a
holistic study of humans and the place of humans in the world. In
this sense, anthropology is important because of its ability to

5
synthesize the learning of other disciplines into one comprehensive
picture of what it means to be human.

Sociology focuses on the universality of social forces in unlikely forms:

sex. class, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and the like. Social forces are

considered remote and impersonal because mostly people have no hand in

creating them, nor do they know anyone who do or did. Social forces are

normally in the guise of rules (written and unwritten)norms and

expectations. The influence of these three is normally taken for granted and

assumed to be natural. The most significant thing in sociology is that it

studied the society social institutions scientifically.

Society is the largest organization of the individuals. Society has its own

problems in every field. It is through the study of sociology that the scientific

study of society has been possible. The study of society not only has value in

modern complex society, it became indispensable. The contribution of

sociology is not less significant in enriching culture. Sociology has given us

training to have rational approach to questions concerning ourselves, our

religion, customs, mores, institutions, values, ideologies .

Political Science is the systematic study of the government and politics. It

makes generalizations and analyses about political systems and political
behavior and uses these results to predict future behavior. Political science
assumes the irregular power relations of members of society but
problematizes the unjust and unfair effects of such relations manifested in
matters related to governance. Studying political science is not only useful
for employment in governmental or local administration jobs, but for life as
well. Studying political science can deepen understanding and knowledge of
the way the world works.

6
LET’S TRY THIS AND SELF-CHECK

Process Questions:

1. What are the changes that occurred in social, cultural and political
sciences?
2. Why are there changes in our society, culture and politics?
3. What do you think are the effects of these changes to the human
behaviour? Justify your answer.
4. Give your own perception about the sypnosis of studying anthropology,
culture and political science as social sciences.

LET’S STUDY AND ANALYZE THESE

Base on the readings above, assess the reasons of cultural, social and
political change.

LET’S LEARN

The people of one culture might have regular practices that the

people of another culture would find distasteful or strange. For

instance, in some cultures people eat meat from animals that are

considered pets in other cultures. In order to bridge the gap between

7
varying cultures, anthropologists study and explain cultural

practices for similarities and differences. Sociology improves our

understanding of society and increases the power of social action,

capabilities, talents and limitations. It enables him to adjust himself to the

environment. Knowledge of society, social groups, social institutions,

associations, their functions etc. helps us to lead an effective social life.

Studying political science can prepare one for various careers that require
highly developed skills in both analysis and communication. Some of the
career paths one can follow include political campaigns, government careers
at local and national level, journalism, business, law and international
organizations.
