1 INTRODUCTION
The KG-DWN 98/2 block is located within 25-40 km of the nearest land-fall, and is adjacent to RIL’s
KG-D6 field and GSPC’s Deendayal field. The water depth in this block varies between 300 metres
and 3,200 metres.
A location map identifying the KG-DWN 98/2 development area is presented as Figure 1.1.
The fields discovered in the area comprise of a number of oil and gas discoveries, and are spread
over a large area. Each field has technical challenges such as high wax, hydrates, sand production
and high pressure / high temperature.
The NDA is estimated to contain 121 Million Te (1,000 Million BBL @ SG 0.7) of initial oil in place
and 78 BCM (2.8 TCF) of initial gas in place spread over seven fields, which was established through
4,769 sq. km of 3D API and drilling of 20 exploratory / appraisal wells.

b) Materials shall be new and unused, clean and free from rust, pits and obvious defects.
Material older than one year from date of manufacturing shall not be permitted.
c) Cast, ductile or malleable iron, aluminium, copper, or copper-bearing alloys shall not be
used in hydrocarbon service.
d) For carbon/carbon manganese steel valves operating below 0ºC and requiring impact
testing, all pressure parts and direct attachment materials shall be manufactured with fully
killed, fine grain materials.
e) All valves specified as galvanized shall be hot dip galvanized with a minimum of 763 grams
of galvanizing material per square meter of surface area, in accordance with ASTM
A123M/ASTM A153.
b) All soft seated valves have limited pressure/temperature ratings above 40ºC. The Piping
Engineer must confirm suitability of soft seated valves for service above this temperature.
c) Seat and seal material stated in the valve datasheet may not be suitable for all services.
Piping Engineer must confirm that the materials specified are suitable for the intended
service.
d) Bolted body joints on ball valves shall have no gap between the mating flanges in the area
of the bolting. (Such a gap can hold water and cause early bolt failure from corrosion or
chloride cracking)
e) Through-body bolted ball valves shall not be used. (Such bolting is excessively exposed to
the external corrosive environment and prone to stretching during a fire).
f) Screwed-body ball valves, where the body can be inadvertently unscrewed during removal
of adjacent piping, shall not be used. Any method used to stop screwed bodies coming
unscrewed must be approved by COMPANY/OWNER. Locking compounds or radial
pinning are not acceptable methods for stopping screwed bodies from unscrewing. Full
seal welding is an acceptable method, subject to COMPANY/OWNER approval on an
individual design basis.
g) Hollow balls of the type made from pipe and a part ball welded together shall not be used.
(They sometimes collapse when the valve is hydrostatic tested following repair).
h) Steel ball valves shall comply with ASME B16.34 and API 608. Valves outside the range of
API 608 shall comply by extension.

i) 50 NS and above steel ball valves shall have end to end and face-to-face lengths per ASME
B16.10 long pattern. Those with Grayloc-type end connections shall have face-to-face
lengths per ring joint flanges.
j) 50 NS and above steel ball valves shall not have a body design such that the ball and seats
are retained by an end entry insert. (End entry inserts become difficult to remove after
several years of service, and the slots for the removal tool can reduce the width of the
flange gasket sealing face).
k) 50 NS and larger steel ball valves which are class 600 and above, or 150 NS and larger,
shall be trunnion mounted.
l) Trunnion mounted ball valve seat rings shall be spring energized. (This is to ensure reliable
sealing at low differential pressures).
m) Unless otherwise specified, trunnion mounted steel ball valves shall have seats which self-
relieve excess body cavity pressure, so that they do not require a body cavity relief valve.
The fluid from the self-relieving seats may be released to the downstream side of the valve,
except when specifies otherwise.
n) Trunnion mounted ball valves, which do not have self-relieving seats, should be supplied
by the manufacturer with a 20 NS minimum threaded and plugged cavity pressure relief
connection. The plug shall be 316 stainless steel with a hexagon head. For such valves,
which are in liquid or multi-phase service, the design contractor should specify, and the
piping fabricator should provide, a thermal relief valve per ASME Sec. VIII with upstream
block valve piped to the connection and discharging locally to atmosphere.
o) Trunnion mounted ball valves shall be provided with an NPT plug-style side-vented bleed
valve for the body cavity. They shall also be provided with grease/sealant injection fittings
for the seats, stem, and any trunnion which has a rotating seal to atmosphere. Injection
fittings shall have vent caps, and shall be for the use of a threaded grease/sealant
attachment and shall not be the button or combination type. Injection fittings for seats
shall have additional spring - loaded check valves which should be separate from the
injection fitting body. Injection to the seats via the body cavity shall not be acceptable. All
bleed valve and grease/sealant fitting components shall be 316 stainless steel, except for
springs which shall be Inconel.
p) 50 NS and larger metallic ball valves, including those with lever operators, shall be suitable
for installation and removal of power and gear actuators while in service and under
pressure.

b) Check valves are designed to prevent the reverse flow of liquid or gaseous products. Check
valves shall not be relied upon for positive isolation purposes.
c) Small check valves (NPS 1-1/2 and smaller) are normally of the lift or piston-type and shall
be used only in horizontal pipes. Non-slam axial flow piston-type check valves are very
reliable in clean service and have a low pressure drop. These check valves shall not be used
in fouling services due to the close tolerances of the moving parts.
d) Swing-type check valves and piston (vertical lift) check valves may be used in horizontal
pipes and in vertical pipes when the flow is upwards.
e) Non-slam, tilting disc, type check valves should be used where unacceptable pressure
surges would otherwise be caused.
f) The use of dual plate check valves is preferred in size ≥ 8”, swing type check valves should
only be used when required.
The gate closure system will not be damaged by the hydrostatic test pressure when
the valve is closed;
The seats were tested in accordance with API standard 598, Valve Inspection and
Test.
b) The manufacturer shall guarantee that the body and weld ends of gate valves have the
required corrosion allowances.
c) Gate valves shall meet the high-pressure closure test requirements of API Standard 598.
d) In order to facilitate opening large gate valves subject to high differential pressures,
equalizing bypass valves are sometimes installed on the valve bodies. The need for this
feature should be considered on:

b) Globe valves having conventional plug and seat rings shall meet the following minimum
requirements;
Single-seated valves shall be top and bottom guided or top guided only, providing
the guide post has sufficient diameter to provide lateral stability to the valve plug.
Plug and seat rings shall be martensitic or precipitation hardened stainless steel
with a hardness suitable for the intended service, or Stellite.
For services other than those containing hydrogen sulphide, guide material shall be
350 HB (Brinell Hardness) minimum, with a differential hardness not less than 50 HB
between sliding surfaces.
The valve stem shall be threaded and pinned to the valve plug.
b) All soft seated butterfly valves have limited pressure/temperature ratings above 40ºC. The
Piping Engineer must confirm suitability of soft seated valves for service above this
temperature
c) Butterfly valves shall be of fire safe design. ‘High performance’ butterfly valves shall meet
the requirements of API Standard 607, ‘Fire Test for Soft Seated Quarter Turn Valves.
d) Soft seated butterfly valves may be used only in low pressure non hydrocarbon service
such as drains and produced water.
e) High performance’ butterfly valves shall be designed in accordance with API 609. Where
justified by economics, they may be used in size ≥ 3” at any place where a full port valve is
not required. They are an acceptable alternative for metal seated ball valves.
f) Short pattern high performance butterfly valves are preferred, long pattern shall be used
only for gate valve replacement/retrofits.
g) Butterfly valves to be used for dead end (end of line) service shall be lugged type. Wafer
type butterfly valves may be used at other places.

Revision 0
b) Valve pressure-class ratings shall be in accordance with ANSI B16.34, API Specification 6A
or API Specification 6D.
Conventional wafer-type valves are not considered to be fire safe. The long,
unprotected bolts of a wafer-type valve will expand in a fire sooner than the valve
and flanges, thereby causing leakage and escalation of the fire.
If a fire safe butterfly valve is required, dual-flanged valves or, for the larger sizes,
welded ends should be used. However, wafer-lug or single flange butterfly valves
may also be considered since their long bolts are not exposed.
Lined valves, such as ball, check, diaphragm and butterfly, are not fire-safe and
shall only be used in systems, which contain non-flammable products.
Sleeve-type plug valves are fire-safe to the outside, but the seat will pass fluid
after exposure to high temperatures. Therefore, they cannot be classed as fire safe
Page 24 of 41

and may only be used for flammable products if other isolation measures are
applied
b) Standard valve descriptions require/specify soft seated valves to be fire safe per the latest
edition of API 607. Soft seat valves can also be fire tested to other standards (e.g. Oil
Companies' Materials Assn. OCMA Specification, Exxon Corp.'s EBP 3-14-4, Factory Mutual
System's FM 6033). Some of these standards are stricter than API 607. The Project
Engineer, depending upon the project requirements, can specify soft seat valves to be fire
tested to a standard other than API 607
c) For any inspection “HOLD”, CONTRACTOR / Manufacturer shall give written notification to
COMPANY/OWNER two weeks prior to the test date.
d) Materials certificate shall be provided for all pressure containing body parts of all metal
valves.
e) Test certificate shall be provided for all metal valves for all test required by
COMPANY/OWNER.

4.3 All unpainted finished surfaces and internal surfaces that contact process fluid shall be
coated with an easily removable rust preventative that shall protect surfaces for a
minimum of six months. All protective coatings (including masking, masking paper, and
other required materials) used during painting and coating operations shall be removed
from the equipment prior to application of rust preventatives or other final transportation
protective materials
4.4 All unpainted instrument bezels, highly-polished surfaces of equipment and components,
control levers, flange faces, threaded parts, and parts subject to corrosion shall be suitably
coated with a protective medium that can be easily removed during final installation.
Special care shall be taken to wash all fingerprints from highly polished machine surfaces
prior to application of rust preventatives.
