Concept No. : ________

1 1st 2020-2021
General Subject Area : Efficiency and Effectiveness of Rice Husk ash (RHA) and Wood ash (WWA) for structural
Concrete mixutre
Specific Area of Interest : Material Engineering

I. Introduction
Nowadays, accumulation of solid waste materials is a growing environmental concern.
The need to reduce its volume is the main concern. Various research and studies have been
directed toward the utilization of waste materials. The considerable way to reduce the waste
materials is to make it as a useful products in construction industry, which is one way to dispose
it an environmentally friendly manner. This innovation have been carried out by many studies in
the usage of waste as an innovative construction materials.
The use of this two waste products to strengthen the structural concrete and to reduce
its weight form can help to bring up on innovation of green engineering. To be a partial
replacement for Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) which can be used for long run.
Rice Husk Ash (RHA) with finer particle size than OPC improves concrete properties,
including that higher substitution amount results in lower water absorption values and the
addition of RHA causes an increment in the compressive strength (Cordeiro, Filho and Fairbarn
2009). The investigation made by Menta and Pirth (2000) on using RHA to reduce temperature
in high strength mass concrete and got result that RHA is a very effective in reducing the
temperature of mass concrete compared to OPC concrete.

II. Significance/ Purpose

1. To the Researcher: this research helps to improve the awareness and productivity in implementing this
research.

2. To the Students: this research aims to widen their knowledge and experience formulation of good
concepts in the near future.
3. To the Construction Sector: this research provides helpful ideas in consumption cost of materials
through recycling waste product.

4. To the Environment: this research helps to reduce the rice husk waste and produce eco-friendly
structures.

5. To the Future Researcher: it is hope that it can be a good help in finding hints on this study especially
on the findings and conclusions.

III. Project Description

A. Objectives
The objective of the study is to investigate the mechanical properties of high strength
concrete with different replacement levels of ordinary Portland cement by Rice Husk Ash. The
standard cubes (150mmX150mmX150mm), cylinders (150mmdiaX300mm height) and prisms
(100mmX100mmX500mm) were caste. In all 144 specimens with M40 and M50 grade mix
cases were caste and tested. The strength effect of High-strength concrete of various amounts
of replacement of cement viz., 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% with Rice Husk Ash of both the grades were
compared with that of the high-strength concrete without Rice Husk Ash. The compressive
strength at 7, 28 and 56 days have been obtained. The results of the mechanical properties of
the rice husk ash at 28 days have shown quite encouraging and interesting results. The
optimum replacement of rice husk ash found to be 10% in both the grades of the concrete.

B. Methodology and Timeline

1. Gathering and Purchasing Materials
a. Portland Cement
b. Wood waste (chips, saw dust, bark, wood shaves)
c. Rice Husk/Hull
2. Preparation of Materials
a. Burning of Wood Waste and Rice Husk/Hull separately.
b. Powderizing of the ashes
c. Building forms of cylindrical sample size of 150mm x 300mm
3. Testing
Upon mixing, various test will be conducted to check the properties of the samples including
the compressive strength, flexural Strength, breaking strength, tensile strength, setting time and
water absorption.
C. Expected Output
The properties of two-waste materials may result to the reduction of problem in waste and will become
useful in construction industry. WWA Rajamma et al. studied the effects of wood waste fly ash obtained from a wood
biomass fired power plant on the compressive strength of the mortar mixes. Wood waste was used to partially
replace cement with replacement percentage 10%, 20%, and 30% of the total binder weight. RHA is a very effective
in reducing the temperature of mass concrete compared to OPC concrete.

IV. Resources Needed/ Cost

The resources needed are the samples which are the Rice Husk/Hull Ash, Wood Waste Ash and other
materials that will be used for the experimental research. The testing materials are included in the characterization of
the properties of samples. Also, the cost that will possibly use in conducting this research.
