INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of The Study

We use language as our way to communicate with the others. We cannot do

our activity without language, it’s show us how important its role in our life. Language is way

to communicate with others, to convey the intent and purpose of a thought, to transfer

opinion from our minds and ways to express ideas to others. This definition compatible with

Chomsky’s definition about language which “a set (finite or infinite) of sentences, each finite

in length and constructed out of a finite set of elements”.

Linguistics is the study of language - how it is put together and how it functions. Various

building blocks of different types and sizes are combined to make up a language. Sounds are

brought together and sometimes when this happen, they change their form and do interesting

things. Words are arranged in a certain order, and sometimes the beginnings and endings of

the words are changed to adjust the meaning. Then the meaning itself can be affected by the

arrangement of words and by the knowledge of the speaker about what the listener will

understand. Linguistics is the study of all of this. There are various branches of linguistics

which are given their own name, some of which are described below. Linguists are people

who study linguistics.

Figurative language is language that's intended to create an image, association, or other

effect in the mind of the listener or reader that goes beyond the literal meaning or expected

use of the words involved. There are 6 types of figurative language that can be found in any

literature work such as song, poem, rhymes and many more. By using figurative language the

writer or the song writer wanted to add a meaning in his work. In this paper the writer would

1
University Of Sumatera Utara
like to find types of figurative language in selected songs of Motionless In White. There are

kind of figurative languages which are:

1. Hyperbole is a way of speaking or writing that makes someone or something sound

bigger, better, more, etc.

Example: I am an enemy of everything

2. Simile, this means (the use of) an expression comparing one thing with another, always

including the words "as" or "

Example: His brain works like a machine

3. Metaphor is a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn’t

literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison.

Example: To rot in this garden made of stones

4. Personification is the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to

something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.

Example: Crawling from hell, fallen from grace

5. Repetition is the simple repeating of a word, within a sentence or a poetical line, with no

particular placement of the words, in order to secure emphasis

Example: Get down never get down never get down

In this paper, the writer chose to examine the figurative language found in the song lyric.

The writer chooses the Motionless In White’s selected songs because they are contain many

kind of figurative language. The writer shows an intention to find meaning in the songs lyric

2
University Of Sumatera Utara
because the song lyric has special idea and meaning which is the songs writer use figurative

language to embellish his song through the lyrics. Figurative language meaning generally

used by the singer to create some special effect and to make it more imaginative. Besides,

language isn't utilized distinctly in the verse.

Motionless In White band they’re band from America who uses figurative language in

their songs. Motionless In White formed 2009 with 7 album from 2009-2019 which are When

Love Met Destruction, The Whoror, Creature, Infamous, Reincarnate, Graveyard Shift and

Disguise. The genre of this band is metal core, gothic metal and alternative metal. The

figurative meaning used in the of Motionless In White songs are interesting research, because

its’ important to know well and this makes the writer decided to a study on the topic ‟ A

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

2.1 Semantics

Palmer (1976:1) says, “Semantics is technical term used refer to the study of meaning.”

In addition, semantics focuses on the meaning of words, phrases, or sentences in the

language. The meaning of phrases, sentences depend on the meaning of its words and the

structure. System for analyzing language divides linguistics expression into two classes:

literal meaning and non-literal meaning. Uses in non-literal are called figurative expression.

Literal meaning denotes the speaker mean according to common or dictionary usage, while

non-literal meaning (figurative expression) connotes additional layers of meaning. When the

people eye or ears receive a message, the mind must interpret the data to convert it into

meaning. This set of memories will give prominence to the most common or literal meanings,

but also suggest reasons for attributing different meanings. The study of the linguistics

meaning or morphemes, words, phrases and sentences is called semantics. Semantic is

concerned with aspects of meaning in language. Work in semantic deal with the description

of word and sentence meaning. There are certain kinds of meaning or certain aspects of

meaning in linguistics (Lyons, 1981:139). Geoffrey Leech (1974:9) explains that semantics

as the study of meaning is central to the study of communication and as communication

becomes more and more pressing. Katz (1972:1) also states that semantics is the study of

linguistic meaning. It is concern with what sentence and other linguistics object express, not

with the arrangement with their syntactic parts or with their pronunciation.

5
University Of Sumatera Utara
2.2 Figurative Language

Abrams (1999:96), states that Figurative Language is a conspicuous departure from

what users of a language apprehend as the standard meaning of words, or else the standard

order of words, in order to achieve some special meaning or effect. Figures are sometimes

described as primarily poetic, but they are integral to the functioning of language and

indispensable to all modes of discourse.

In addition, Perrine (1982:61) states that figurative language is extensively characterized

as at any rate of saying some different option from common way. It is all the more barely

determinable as a method of saying a certain something and significance another. The

perusers and scholars appropriately use better style than clarify the thoughts of the traditional

logical them. Methods for old style way of talking has been utilized by the Roman Cicero and

Suetonius writer who wears allegorical in the feeling of "shadows, pictures, suggestions,

purposeful anecdotes". Glucksberg (2001:8), states that figurative meaning is derived from

the literal and can be discovered by discovering the nature of substitution of the

metaphorical for the literal.

From the explanation above we can see that figurative language is the way the writer

express his thoughts and the inner feelings.

2.3 Types of Figurative Language

According to Zainuddin (1992:52), figurative language consists of 19 kinds. In this

paper, the writer will only explain 5 from 19 kinds of figurative language. They are metaphor,

hyperbole, personification, simile, and repetition.

6
University Of Sumatera Utara
There are several kind of figurative language, as follow :

2.3.1 Hyperbole
According to Zainuddin (1999:54) states that “hiperbola adalah gaya yang

mengungkapkan sesuatu dengan cara melebih lebihkan dengan tujuan untuk menggerakkan

hati”. It means hyperbole use to make something bigger what actually it is, without

decreasing the meaning.

For example:

His house is like a heaven

That sentence means he has such wonderful, aesthetic and huge house. We can see that

hyperbole use to make something looks big apparently not.

2.3.2 Personification
Zainuddin (1992:53), tells that personifikasi ialah melukiskan sesuatu (benda mati)

digambarkan seperti yang dilakukan manusia atau seperti benda hidup. It means that

personification is a kind of style of figurative language depicting inanimate objects or goods

that do not animate as if it has the properties of human nature. Meanwhile, Lingga (2007:15)

states that personifikasi adalah representasi dari benda mati atau ide-ide abstrak sebagai

makhluk hidup. It means that personification is a “portrayal of lifeless things or unique

thoughts as living creature.

For example:

Your memories following me.

There is a word “following” which is act like a living things.

From sentence above we can conclude that personification is kind of figurative

language that describing word like imitating a human or living creature.

7
University Of Sumatera Utara
2.3.3 Metaphor
According to Keraf (2009: 139), metaphor is a kind of analogy that compares two

things directly, but in a form that brief. Metaphor as direct comparisons do not use the word:

as, tubs, like, and so on, so that the first principal directly connected with the principal second

fact. Process the same as simile but gradually equations and basic information about the first

eliminated.

For example:

She is a shining star

From sentence above we can understand that the meaning is she is on top of his career

or she is everyone attention.

2.3.4 Simile
According to Montgomery, Durant, Fabb, Furniss and Mills (2007:119), simile is a

subdivision of methapor in that, as its name suggests, it draws attention to a similarity

between two terms through words such as “like and „as‟. Simile does not, strictly speaking,

always entail figurative language, since both terms of a simile can often be understood

literally.

For example:

We are like sky and earth

This expression using comparison between sky and earth which means cant be

together or cant unite as one.

From the experts’s opinion and example above, it can be concluded that simile was

comparison that is explicit, between two things using conjunctive. They are like, as than,

similar, resemble or seems.

8
University Of Sumatera Utara
2.3.5 Repetition
According to Askarova (2015), Repetition is the simple repeating of a word, within a

sentence or a poetical line, with no particular placement of the words, in order to secure

emphasis. This is such a common literary device that it is almost never even noted as a

figure of speech.

For example:

He wants to kill kill kill kill everyone last of them.

In the sentence, we can see a repeating of a word “kill” which is a repetition, and it

can be concluded that Repetition is repeating of a word which among them are still related

to each other.

2.4 Song

Song is an art of music that contains words and melody and we used to sing in our

daily life. At its most basic, a song is a short piece of music, usually with words. It combines

melody and vocals, although some composers have written instrumental pieces, or musical

works without words, that mimic the quality of a singing voice. The words of a song are

called lyrics.

Song usually performed in concert, ceremonial and any kind of event. A person who

sing is called singer and the performance is called singing. According to Oxford Dictionary

song is short piece of music with words that you sing. Songs can be categorized in many

genres such as pop, rock, jazz, latin, country and many more.

In a song we can find lyric, which means lyric is literature works. According to free

dictionary online (dictionary.com) lyric is an artistic form of auditory communication

incorporating instrumental or vocal tones in a structured and continuous manner. From

statement above we can conclude lyric can complete and embellish the song.

9
University Of Sumatera Utara
2.5 Lyric

Lyric is a collection of verses and choruses, making up a complete song, or a short

and non-narrative poem. A lyric uses a single speaker, who expresses personal emotions or

thoughts. Lyrical poems, which are often popular for their musical quality and rhythm, are

pleasing to the ear, and are easily put to music. Stanford (2003:65) states the word “lyric

come from the lyre, the Greek instrument used for musical accompaniment of poetry, which

was often sung or chanted. Albeit a verse sonnet may delineate an out war activity, it by and

large spotlights on internal response, knowledge, or reactions. Meanwhile, Hornby

(1995:703) defines, lyric is expressing the writer’s feelings. Lyric is made to express deep

emotion of the writer.

DESCRIPTION OF DATA ON FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE

3.1 Hyperbole

Hyperbole is an expression that exaggerates something or extravagant statement

that makes something looks and sounds bigger. We can see the type of this figurative

language from the sentence, if the sentence exaggerate or looks impossible to happen.

In the song called ” Reincarnate” has been found 2 hyperbole, in the song , in the

song “Abigail” has been found 1 hyperbole and in the song” Eternally Yours” has been found

2 hyperbole. They are:

1. “Crawling from hell

fallen from grace

And there is nothing left to take

Leaving the past to the grave

So we can reincarnate”

From statement above we can conduct that it’s a hyperbole, we can see exaggerates

sentence there crawling from hell fallen from grace, we can see that as a struggle from

a human who’ve been condemned. That is too exaggerates.

11
University Of Sumatera Utara
So we can reincarnate”

By sentence above we can see that statement as type of hyperbole, it describes that

someone want to reincarnate with proverb Christ’s misery. The word nail means a pain

that a man to suffer to live again.

3.”Wish upon the star but they won’t save you tonight

God has forsaken thee to hell, we are going to hang from the sky

Feel the weight of the stones crush hard on your chest

Confess, confess before you run short of breath

Confess, confess here for your sins”

By statement above we clarify as a hyperbole because, the writer wants to portray a

sinner that cannot be forgiven for what she has done even a star that generally can grant

any wishes won’t save her.

4.”Im ready to bury all of my bones

Im ready to lie but say I wont

So tell me your secret

And join me in pieces

To rot in this garden made of stone”

In this statement we can see that this is type of hyperbole, it describes that a couple

who love each other endlessly event their love cannot be separated away even with

tombstone on their grave. Rot in this garden show that they died together. And the word

garden made of stone is too exaggerates.

12
University Of Sumatera Utara

Im ready to lie but say I wont

So tell me your secret

And join me in pieces

To rot in this garden made of stone

In this lyric we can see as a type of hyperbole, it describes that a person willingly

to die to his/her love, we can see this through the words above” ready to bury all of my

bones”. The lyric is too excessive.

3.2 Simile

Simile is figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a

different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid. While similes are mainly

used in forms of poetry that compare the inanimate and the living, there are also terms in

which similes are used for humorous purposes and comparison.

In the song entitle ”Soft” has been found 1 simile, in the song entitle “Contemptress” has

been found 1 simile. They are:

6.”do you leave your throne as you cast your stones”.

This lyric is type of simile because there is a word using “as” as characteristic of

simile. That lyric means like a dignity of a person who died, it describes a human with

high position died and in the underworld and asked about good thing he has done in his

life.

13
University Of Sumatera Utara
7.”you burn like a cigarette”

This categorized as simile because there is a word “like” which means comparing

something, this is one of characteristic of simile. The lyric means a passionate

relationship between the singer and his girlfriend.

3.3 Metaphor

Metaphor is a figure of speech that makes an implicit, implied, or hidden

comparison between two things that are unrelated, but which share common characteristic.

In other words, a resemblance of two contradictory or different objects are made based on a

single or common characteristic.

In the song entitle ”Reincarnate” has been found 1 metaphor, in the song entitle”

Contemptress” has been found 2 metaphor. They are:

8.”leaving the past to the grave”

From statement above we can see as metaphor, he really not leaves his “past” he’s

trying to say to forget all his sin and misery he felt before in his life. The word “grave”

refers to his new life after his death.

9.”Dont hide the sin from our lips”

“Glowing in amber burn in sin”

The lyric above is kind of metaphor, because he is not really “hiding from the sin”

he trying to describes his passionate love to his lover. This word “passionate” refers to

intimate relation between wife and husband.

14
University Of Sumatera Utara
10.”a burning lust to catch the flame”

A burning lust to catch the flame is a metaphor, he is trying to describe about two

human that love each other deeply. The word “ burning lust” refers to their love that

heating up.

3.4 Personification

Personification is the projection of characteristics that normally belong only to humans

onto inanimate objects, animals, deities, or forces of nature. It means that you give human

feelings and action to an object or animal.

In the song entitle “Reincarnate” has been found 1 personification, which is:

11.”b**ch you give a f**kin aspirin a headache”

From lyric above we conduct as personification, we can see that word “aspirin”

this is strong example show that it is a personification, because you can’t give aspirin a

headache. It sounds impossible to give an aspirin pill a headache.

3.5 Repetition

Repetition is the way to make sentence memorable or unforgettable by repeating

the words often

In the song entitle” Abigail” has been found 2 repetition and in the song ”Soft” has

been found 1 repetition. They are:

15
University Of Sumatera Utara
12.”she’s is a witch she’s a witch and I’m a heretic so”.

Lyric above is type of repetition because of this lyric “she is a witch she a witch”,

this lyric describe a wicked girl that sinful for what she have done.

13.”confess, confess before you run short of breath

Confess, confess here for your sins”

These categorized as repetition because word ”confess” mention several times, the

lyric means to repent for sin we have done and to pray and confess every bad things we

do in our life time.

14.”I’m insane I’m insane in the membrane”.

hyperbole and repetition is the most figurative language that used in this 5 songs, it seems

that the writer found his lyric’s beauty from figurative language.

Figurative language is often to use in any literal work such a music, poem and

poetry. In figurative language you can find multiple meaning in any literature work, that’s

why the writer thinks the student of English Diploma need to learn more about figurative

work you need to able focus on the data and keep collecting data from any source to find the

proper meaning or the messages.

BIOGRAPHY OF MOTIONLESS IN WHITE

Motionless in White was founded in 2005 by members Chris Motionless, who played
guitar and lead vocals, Angelo Parente on drums, Frank Polumbo on guitar and Kyle White
on bass during high school. They incepted many other titles into the group until finally
settling on what would be Motionless in White. Chris Motionless and other members have
noted bands such as Poison the Well, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Johnny Cash, Depeche
Mode, and other musical groups as their inspiration. In 2005 they released their self-
distributed demo.
Within the year after the release of their demo, new member Josh Balz was added as the
band's keyboardist, Frank Polumbo took over on bass and new members, Michael Costanza
and Thomas "TJ" Bell, were added to the band as the new guitarists, moving Chris
Motionless solely to lead vocals. The band was discovered by Zach Neil while performing at
a local nightclub called The Staircase. Neil signed the band first to management and then
later to his record label Masquerade recordings. They recorded their first EP The
Whorror which was produced by Zach Neil and mixed by Dan Malsch and released it
through Masquerade Recordings/Warner music group in 2007.

After touring in support of The Whorror, Motionless in White had written enough songs to
complete a full-length album. The album was named When Love Met Destruction. When
Love Met Destruction was recorded in 2008 initially at Soundmine recording studio then
finished at Zach Neil's home by Dave Cutrone and Zach Neil, and was released the same year
on Masquerade Recordings. Neil added the band to his stage on the Warped tour with the
new record in hand and the band quickly caught the attention of Shawn Milke
from Alesana who offered to manage the band. Shortly thereafter Bob Becker of Fearless
Records contacted Zach Neil to make an offer to buy the band's recording contract and sign
the band to Fearless. The band and Neil agreed and Tragic Hero was offered to incubate the

first official release to help grow the band leading up to their Fearless debut. The band was
never actually signed to Tragic Hero Records.
The band parted ways with guitarist Michael Costanza and brought in current guitarist
Ryan Sitkowski as his replacement. Despite being signed to Fearless before the months
leading up to the release of the EP form of When Love Met Destruction, it was distributed
through Tragic Hero on February 17, 2009. The song "Ghost in the Mirror" was made as the
band's first ever single and had a music video produced for it.

God has forsaken thee to hell, we're going to hang from the sky
Feel the weight of the stones crush hard on your chest
Confess, confess before you run short of breath
Confess, confess here for your sins

Burn baby burn

She's a witch, she's a witch and I'm a heretic so, learn
Oh Abigail how could you do this to us?

Oh Abigail how could you do this to us?

You were a product of lust (Product of lust)
And now this rope on my neck stopped all the blood to my head
So, now Salem please save me (Salem please save me)

"It's not on a ship we'll meet again Abigail

But, in hell, I say God is dead"
I'll see you when we both meet in hell

How could you?

When we both meet in hell

REINCARNATE
Get up
You pull the trigger just for fun
Forgetting I'm a loaded gun
So hate me for the things I've done
And not for what I've now become
I want this
I need this
I love it
Crawling from hell
Fallen from grace
And there is nothing left to take
Leaving the past to the grave
So we can reincarnate
You sit upon your throne of filth
Condemning what you haven't built
So hate me cause you're standing still
Watching while I shoot to kill
I live this
I breathe this
You crave it
Crawling from hell
Fallen from grace
And there is nothing left to take
Leaving the past to the grave
So we can reincarnate

There's one thing you forget
You can't make me play dead
I've swallowed your bullshit
No respect
You make me fucking sick
Give me a reason
I won't bite my tongue
I am not afraid spineless
A dominion of nothing is all you will reign
You laugh but what did you create
Bitch you give a fucking aspirin a headache
Through hell
From grace
There's nothing left
Crawling from hell
Fallen from grace
There's nothing left for you to take
Driving the nail through my mistakes
So we can reincarnate
When we lie down, we're sore and sick
We fall down, sink or swim
Underground
The remedy for who we are
And what lies beneath
Reincarnate

ETERNALLY YOURS
Blow the bridge to the past
Wipe the fingerprints
Melt your heart encased in wax
Steal it with a kiss
Our fate engraved
Scar enslaved
As we mutually destruct
Repose, my love, I've sinned enough for the both of us
I'm ready to bury all of my bones
I'm ready to lie but say I won't
So tell me your secrets
And join me in pieces
To rot in this garden made of stones
Eternally yours
I feed like you taught me and selflessly swallow
We coalesce in darkness, so selfishly hollow
Examine the wreckage
Writhing in tempo
Invisible anguish casting a shadow
I'm ready to bury all of my bones
I'm ready to lie but say I won't
So tell me your secrets
And join me in pieces
To rot in this garden made of stones
Eternally yours

As we rest in pieces, though I know not your name
I would suffer forever to absolve all your pain
And in the name of love
I'm ready to bury all of my bones
I'm ready to lie but say I won't
So tell me your secrets
And join me in pieces
To rot in this garden made of stones
I'm ready to bleed to make amends
And sleep in this dirt we call our bed
So tell me your secrets
And join me in pieces
To fall and rewrite the bitter end
Eternally yours
I'm more than willing to rot in hell with you
I'm ready to bury all of my bones
I'm ready to lie but say I won't
So tell me your secrets
And join me in pieces
To rot in this garden made of stones
I'm ready to bleed to make amends
And sleep in this dirt we call our bed
So tell me your secrets
And join me in pieces
To fall and rewrite the bitter end
Eternally yours

SOFT
You're mine motherfucker
Let me begin with envy's a sin
You'll have to find new words to invent
'Cause I've heard your broken record, and i'm not impressed
I love when you talk, I just use it to drive me
I won't let your judgement define me
I'm not broken, so don't fix me
I want you to hate me
Tell me what you've lost
Hang me on your cross
If you're so wise, then why are you so Soft?
Do you leave your "throne" as you cast your stones?
I'm above living under your microscope
I'm insane, I'm insane in the membrane
I wanna fuck your face with a switchblade
I'm not broken, so don't fix me
I'll leave you behind me
Internet killed the video star
Cry baby cry baby, did I just hear you whimper?
Cry baby cry
Suck my middle fucking finger
Cry baby, Cry baby
What have you done lately?
Cry baby, Cry baby
What have you done?

Tell me what you've lost.
Demonize my flaws
Do they call you when dumb needs a mascot?
Do you leave your throne as you cast your stones?
I'm above living under your microscope
You dilate, god of your existence
Begging me to listen while you pray
Swallow in vain, sliver spoon religion
Closer from a distance
You're mine motherfucker

CONTEMPTRESS
In darkness, you're all around me
I know our future, I feel your body
What if I told you that I planned this?
What if I want to lose control?
What if I take the blame and become the drug
And dissolve as you swallow?
Covered in your silhouette
Elated for your bitter end
Don't hide the shame from our lips
(Glowing in amber, burn in sin)
Against the wall, we fall from grace
The pain we love is taking shape
A burning lust to touch the flame
Over and over again

We've played this role a thousand times
The same old script, just different lies
You disappear without a trace
Concealing the crimes on your face
Beneath all the pleasure, all you are is pain
And you deserve every second of your suffering
But yet I can't stop, crawling to your doorstep
Every time you beckon
I'm self destructing, trust in nothing
Save me
You burn like a cigarette
I took my time to suck you in
So take me out of my head
And spread your ashes on my skin
Against the wall, we fall from grace
The pain we love is taking shape
A burning lust to touch the flame
Over and over again
We've played this role a thousand times
The same old script, just different lies
You disappear without a trace
Concealing the crimes on your face (crawl)
Your skin like winter
I felt you shiver
I heard you whisper
But the pills were quicker

I watched you wither
I am the killer
Against the wall we fall from grace
The pain we love is taking shape
A burning lust to touch the flame
(Over and over again)
We beg like dirt and flesh disarms
We built it up, to fall apart
Even the honesty was fake
Concealing the crimes on your face
