The generation gap cannot be bridged

The generation gap is the conflict that arises between different generations due to lack of
communication and understanding, but it is mainly used as an explanation for the problematic
relationship between parents and their offspring, at any stage of life. Although it is a widespread
phenomenon, it is an exaggeration to say that this gap can never be bridged.

It is essential to acknowledge that a bridge can be built only if people on both banks of the river
agree to it. Consequently, the generation gap can be bridged only through the mutual effort of both
parents and children. The difficulty of such an endeavour is the very fact that each side waits for the
other to take the initiative, or even accomplish the whole task.

As a result, it is fair to say that as long as the wisdom, life experience and patience of the parent can
communicate with the child’s newer experience and the need for personal choices, there is a chance
of a bridge being built over the conflict region. A child may not have been a parent, but a parent has
certainly been a child.

In conclusion, the possibility of a bridge over the generation gap should always be considered.
