We should spend more money on preserving our past – it is too

important to lose.

Some people feel that there is no point in spending any money at all to preserve
the past, while others think that not enough money is spent because it is viral to preserve
our full heritage. Why do they feel this?
There are many reasons why the past is important. For one thing, we can learn
from mistakes that people made in history, so that we don’t make them again. For
another thing, if we understand where we have come from, then we might understand
where we are going! A final point is that it is important to preserve artefacts from the
past so that future generations can understand how life used to be. Money is currently
spent on teaching history and on building museums and preserving historical sites,
but is it enough?
It is expensive to preserve the past – building museums, excavating sites,
promoting exhibition – all these take both time and money. Some people feel that we
should look forward, not back, and that the money would be better spent on such useful
amenities as hospitals. Others accept that although some money should be spent, we
should not spend too much.
On balance, I feel that it is necessary to have a perspective on the present, and
this can only be achieved by studying and preserving the past. There are more things in
life than simply being practical, and if we spend more money on preserving the past, then
we are investing in future generations. For this reason, I agree with the statement that we
should spend more money on preserving our past – it is too important to lose.
