Title: Calculation of seed requirement based on germination , purity.
Objectives: Calculate seed requirement of crops based on germination and purity.
Introduction.
Seed rate is the quantity of seed of a crop that is required to sow a unit area of
land for optimum crop production. The importance of determining seed rate are;
 To maintain optimum plant population in the field for higher yield harvest.
 To prevent seed wastage from excess sowing such reduces initial cost of
production.
 To know the quantity of seed needed for sowing in advance.
 To ensure quality crop production.
If we know recommanded seed rate(RSR) , area germination
% and purity% then,

RSR ( kg ⋰ ha ) × A rea(ha)
Amount of required seed(Kg) = ×100×100
G %× p%

CALCULATION.
1. Calculate the amount of sunflower seed required based on following
information.
a)Seed rate=7kg/ha
b)Area=3 ha
c) Germination % =76%
d) Purity % = 90%

Solution:
RSR ( kg ⋰ ha ) × Area( ha)
Amount of seed required = ×100×100 kg.
G %× p%

7 ×3
= 76 ×90 ×100×100

=30.7 kg.
Hence, the required amount of seed is 30.7 kg.

2.Calculate theamount of Sunflower seed required for 65 kattha of land based

on following information.
a)Seed rate = 8kg/ha
b)Purity% = 95%
c)Germination% = 80%

3.Calculate the amount of seed required for 60 ropani of field if recommanded

seed rate for wheat is 125kg/ha.
Here,
60
Area(A) = 60 ropani = 20 = 3 ha.
Recommanded Seed Rate(RSR) = 25kg/ha
Now,
Amount of seed required = A × RSR
= 3 ×125
=375 kg.
Hence the amount of seed required in given wheat field is 375 kg.

Conclusion: Hence we were able to calculate required amount of seed for a given
area.
