Essay: Directions: In two paragraphs consisting of 5-10 sentences explain the following
questions below. 5 pts each

1. What is the Difference between Verbal and Non-verbal Communication?

A. Verbal Communication:

Verbal Communication refers to communicating through spoken words. The sender gives his
thoughts, feelings, and opinions on a certain matter by using their voice. This can be expressed
in the form of speeches, presentations, conversations, etc. Sound is an important part in a
communication because this can express information more precisely. There are also challenges
that might bear in a verbal communication such as poor choice of words, and tone.

B. Non – Verbal Communication:

Non-verbal Communication refers to communicating without sound and words and instead
relies on body languages such as signs, gestures and facial expressions. This also includes the
way we use time, space and silence in a conversation. Verbal Communication and Non-verbal
communication go hand in hand together because with non-verbal cues, a verbal conversation
may feel lacking and vice versa.

2. Give at least two types of Non-Verbal Communication and explain it.

A.

A type of non-verbal communication is chronemics. This refers to how we experience and use
our time and how that can affect our way of communicating with other people. Time depends
on our mood, interest, schedule, etc. and if it were to be suddenly disturbed by abnormalities,
this can bear consequences such as when a person is talking to you and suddenly tells you about
a boring topic, the time feels slow to you and you feel uninterested.

B.

Another type of non-verbal communication is silence. Sometimes we underestimate how

powerful silence is because different uses of it may bear positive effects or consequences. We
sometimes talk too much so silence helps us to value a sender’s message because with silence,
we can listen and respond to them effectively. Silence also can be negatively used, such as
ignoring a person when they are talking to you or giving your significant other the silent
treatment. Both are examples of ineffective communication.
