IMPORTANCE AND PURPOSES OF RESEARCH

Research 1/NCM 111

KRISTIAN KARL B KIW-IS BSN III SEPTEMBER 05, 2020

Instruction: Answer comprehensively and extensively.

1. Discuss the interrelationship of research to:

Give 1 example for each.

a. Nursing education

The use of action research in knowledge development and in assessing nursing knowledge for publications could
increase nursing knowledge. At its core, action research methodology involves a systematic research process and
thoughtful reflection on the process for making a change.

 Build the science of nursing education through the generation and translation of innovative teaching and
learning strategies
 Build faculty teaching practice
 Create partnerships, including inter/intra-professional education (IPE) and global initiatives, that advance
learning, enhance health and client care
 Build a nurse faculty workforce to meet the needs of nursing education, staff, administration, and healthcare

The ultimate goal of these endeavors is to develop the science of nursing education that will be used to prepare
practitioners who deliver excellent health care. To accomplish this goal, research needs to focus on the generation and
translation of evidence in the areas of innovative teaching and learning strategies, faculty teaching practice, educational
partnerships, and nurse faculty workforce capacity.

Although publications on action research are available in nursing higher education in some countries, the use of action
research is much more prevalent in related disciplines. Use of action research is evident in addressing health disparities
leadership/organization development and nursing practice in general.

b. Nursing practice

Research provides the foundation for high-quality, evidence-based nursing care. However, there isn't a direct flow of
knowledge from research into practice.

Research helps nurses determine effective best practices and improve patient care. Nurses in an online RN to BSN
program learn to retrieve, read, critique and apply nursing research. Because new information is always coming to light,
it is crucial that BSN-prepared nurses know the importance of research. The findings from peer-reviewed studies can
correct old misunderstandings, pave the way for new treatment protocols and create new methodology — all of which
improve patient outcomes.

Every nurse can benefit from knowing why nursing research is important, how research is conducted and how research
informs patient care. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs teach nurses to appreciate and use research in their
everyday careers, compare findings and read published research.

Nurses need research because it helps them advance their field, stay updated and offer better patient care. Information
literacy skills can help nurses use information more effectively to develop their own conclusions. Evidence-based
practice is important for nurses. Nurses need to understand, evaluate and use research in their careers. Nursing schools
teach these skills to help nurses advance in their careers.
There is a need for an ample body of accumulated empirical evidence to which nurses can refer in order to inform
clinical practice. Any responsible and accountable vocation claiming to be a profession, and answerable to a professional
body, requires an empirical evidence base. This is the only way that standards of practice can be evaluated and
improved, for the benefit of the general public. Research enables nursing practice to keep pace with a rapidly changing
world in which health care practices must continually improve to meet changing and ever more demanding patient
expectations and requirements. Only through continued research activity can appropriate evidence-based ‘best practice’
guidelines be introduced to ensure the good quality nursing care.

c. Nursing Management

The nurse administrator can be a very effective stakeholder toward adoption of the innovation by conducting
researches. Leadership by point-of-care and senior managers is increasingly recognized as critical to the acceptance and
use of research evidence in practice. Collaborative practice in interdisciplinary teams to reduce the risk and to minimize
the impact of errors that occur (strategies for improving safety, methods to improve communication and teamwork).

‘Leadership involves the use of interpersonal skills to influence others to accomplish a specific goal’. High-quality health
services require leadership & skilled management. Leaders rise out of the need to improve a situation. Managers take
over the day-to-day functions required to sustain the improvement. They are important for the successful introduction
and implementation of advanced practice nursing roles. Leadership and management helps to align the nursing
outcomes with the organizational goals. The establishment of a healthy work environment requires strong nursing
leadership at all levels of the organization. Leadership and management ensure that care delivery aligns with the highest
quality of care: – Understand key quality and safety improvement measures. – Lead staff training to ensure the safest
care for patients. – Ensure staff access to necessary equipment thereby researchers may develop, benefit and increased
knowledge about the nursing management that they may apply on their respective duties.

d. Informatics

Clinical Research Informatics involves the use of informatics in the discovery and management of new knowledge
relating to health and disease. It includes management of information related to clinical trials and also involves
informatics related to secondary research use of clinical data. Clinical research informatics and translational
bioinformatics are the primary domains related to informatics activities to support translational research.

Clinical informatics includes a wide range of topics ranging from clinical decision support to visual images (e.g.
radiological, pathological, dermatological, ophthalmological, etc.); from clinical documentation to provider order entry
systems; and from system design to system implementation and adoption issues.

2. What are the potential consequences to the nursing profession if nurses stopped conducting their own research?

The nursing researchers will not make discoveries, the practice of nursing will not develop or may not updated. The
information students learn can become outdated, so being unable to keep up with new developments in nursing it may
not help graduates in their careers. The potential consequences to the nursing profession learning may not effectively
process and use of information from published research that could have helped them because published research can
improve their information literacy.

3. The health care delivery system in the Philippines has adopted changes to promote and maintain quality client
care. How could this/these change/s influence nursing research and the use of research findings? You may cite
an example to explain.
Research is essential to find out which treatments work better for patients. It plays an important role in discovering new
treatments, and making sure that we use existing treatments in the best possible ways that makes the health care
delivery system. Research can find answers to things that are unknown, filling gaps in knowledge and changing the way
that healthcare professionals work. Some of the common aims for conducting research studies are to:

 Diagnose diseases and health problems

 Prevent the development or recurrence of disease and reduce the number of people who become ill
 Treat illness to improve survival rates or increase the number of people who are cured
 Improve the quality of life for people living with illness
