Vocabulary

Basal Metabolic Rate The rate at which the body uses energy
while at rest to keep vital functions going
such as breathing and keeping warm.
Protein Large molecules that contain one or more
chains of amino acids that are an essential
part of organisms, such as structural
components of body tissues.
Carbohydrate A molecule containing carbon, oxygen, and
hydrogen that is converted into blood
glucose/sugar to provide the body with
energy.
Fiber Parts of fruits, nuts, and vegetables that
cannot be digested and plays a vital role in
digestion.

Body Mass Index A weight-to-height ratio, calculated by


dividing one’s weight in kg by the square of
one’s height in meters. It can be used as
indicator of obesity and underweight.
Vitamins Any group of organic compounds that are
essential for normal growth and nutrition.

Be able to explain how BMR relates to body weight, size-height, and gender.

Be able to explain how Total Daily Expenditure varies among individuals.

Be able to analyze food choices and choose a healthier option based on nutritional value.
Things to consider when analyzing: vitamins, proteins, minerals-sodium/salt, fat,
carbohydrates, sugars, calories.

Be able to determine energy usage based on activity intensity-Carbs, protein, and fat.
