INTRODUCTION

The study concentrates on understanding the usage patterns of the public

spaces in the Kozhikode city. Kozhikode, also known as Calicut, is the district
headquarters of Kozhikode district, located in the state of Kerala, India. In many
cultures and societies worldwide, women have been mostly related and associated
with private spaces, while public spaces were mostly accessible and associated with
men. It is believed that the traditional division of labor is what resulted in the
segregation. Though gender roles and occupations are changing with passing times,
the association of spaces does not seem to have changed much.
