A concept paper for the project of tomato and tomato paste production in Bamyan City,

Afghanistan

Background:
ASAC is an agriculture company registered with Afghanistan government and is active in
Bamyan province and surrounding regions since 2018 in the fields of agriculture improvement.
It has implemented several projects with UNFAO in Bamyan and some other projects are still
ongoing.
Bamyan city is the capital of Bamyan province, located at the central part of Afghanistan called
Central Highland Region (CHR). Bamyan is the center for three provinces that covers 18
districts. The total population in this region estimated to 1.2 million out of which, 80 % of the
population’s income depends on agriculture and livestock.
The main cash crops in this region is potato, apple, apricot, dairy, bean and some vegetable.
The farmers cultivate wheat and different vegetable like tomato for their own consumption.
Tomato is one of the vegetable which have a good harvest in my region but it is not very
common to cultivate widely while, we import the tomato pastes and tomato itself in huge
amount every year either from other regions or neighboring countries like Iran and Pakistan.
The tomato has a good harvest, especially with the greenhouse, we expect each greenhouse
will produce 700 -1000 kg of tomato in each season

The main goal of the project:

To improve the locals income through improving the local’s agriculture harvest especially
tomato harvest
Objectives:
1. 50 greenhouses will be installed for 50 families to produce tomato as samples
2. Improved tomato Seeds, fertilizer and other equipment will be distributed to 50 farmers
3. Technical trainings will be provided for 500 farmers, 10 x 50 = 500 farmers will be
selected from the nearby villages of the greenhouse to get training during the whole
process across the year. We provide theoretical knowledge and also practically show
how to cultivate and grow tomato in greenhouses
4. Establish two factories for the production of tomato paste (one in Bamyan center and
another in Daikundi center).
5. Provide theoretical and practical trainings to 40 women on how to produce tomato
pastes (20 in each center).
Distribution plan:
To give idea to the community on greenhouse harvest, the company will try to distribute
greenhouses in different villages and districts. Below is the exact location plan for greenhouses
distribution:
1. Folladi valley 15 greenhouses in various villages
2. Dokani valley 5 greenhouses in various villages
3. Bamyan center 10 greenhouses in various villages
4. Shashpul valley 5 greenhouses in various villages
5. Sadat valley 5 greenhouses in various villages
6. Daikundi center, 10 gh in various villages
Specification of greenhouses:
Depend on the location, some of the greenhouses may be bigger in size and some will be
smaller but typically, the company would design each of them 15 X 6 meters = 90 square meter.
The Northern side of the greenhouse would need to construct a wall with local mad in order to
protect the plastic from heavy wind and accumulate more sun-heat inside. We will use the
wood as the structure and the top of greenhouse would be covered by plastic.
In some places, we need to change soil inside the greenhouse to make sure the proper soil is
provided; we will provide animal fertilizer (dung), fertilizer, seed and guidebook.
Sustainability and Life Cycle of the Project:
The greenhouse will be constructed on the land of landowners. It will be a private property for
the farmers. The company will sign a contract with the farmers not to destroy the greenhouse
within one year and continue cultivating at least for five years making sure getting a positive
outcome based on each years’ experience. They will be responsible to maintain and keep them
fruitful for their own benefits. The farmers will collect the harvest and will sale to the open
market and the company would buy the harvest with a reasonable price to produce tomato
paste. The farmers will collect all its income for herself, only they may need to pay 20 % of its
income to the company because the company will reinvest them on construction and
distribute of more greenhouse to more farmers in the next year. It will be continued the same
at least for five years.
As a traditional culture, women are more dependent on men’s income in Afghanistan, to help
the women’s independent income, the company will try, as much as possible, to select women
as beneficiary farmer.
