ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

PART-A (5X2=10)

1. Define helical springs.

2. What are the differences between closed coil & open coil helical springs?
3. Define Torsion and give at least two practical examples for it.
4. List the loads normally acting on a shaft.
5. What is meant by Torsional rigidity?

PART-B (5X13=65)

11) Derivation of shear stress produced in a circular shaft subjected to torsion.

12)A solid shaft has to transmit the power 150 kW at 2000 r.p.m. The maximum torque transmitted
in each revaluation exceeds the mean by 36%. Find the suitable diameter of the shaft, if the shear
stress is not to exceed 75 N/mm^2 and maximum angle of twist is 1.50 in a length of 3.30m and G =
0.80 x 105 N/mm^2.
13)A hollow shaft with diameter ration 3/5 is required to transmit 450 k W at 120 rpm. The shearing
stress in the shaft must not exceed 60 N/mm^2 and the twist in a length of 2.5 m is not to exceed 1˚.
Calculate the minimum external diameter of the shaft. C=80 kN/mm^2

14)A solid circular shaft 200mm in diameter is to be replaced by a hollow shaft the ratio of external
diameter to internal diameter being 5:3. Determine the size of the hollow shaft if maximum shear
stress is to be the same as that of a solid shaft. Also find the percentage savings in mass.
15)The stiffness of a close coiled helical spring is 15N/mm2 of compression under a maximum load of
60 N; the maximum shearing stress produced in the wire of the spring is 125 N/mm2. The solid length
of the spring (when the coils are touching) is given as 5 cm find
(i) Diameter of wire
(ii) mean diameter of the coils and
(iii) Number of coils required, take modulus of rigidity is 4.5x104N/mm2.
Part C (1×15=15)
16)A helical spring in which the mean diameter of the coils is 12 times the wire diameter, is to be
designed to absorb 300 J energy with an extension of 150 mm. the maximum shear stress is not to exceed
140 N/mm2 . Determine the mean diameter of the spring, diameter of the wire which forms the spring and
the number of turns. Assume the modulus of rigidity of the material of the spring as 80 KN/mm 2
