 Adversary = one’s opponent in a contest, conflict or dispute


 Subtlety = similar to subtle, precision, delicacy
 Cackling = laughing in a loud, harsh way
 Elatedly = very happy or proud; in high spirits
 Convoy = a group of ships or vehicles travelling together,
typically one accompanied by armed troops
 Scarpered/scarper = run away
 Excavating = make a hole or channel by digging/ dig out
material from the ground
 Batted/bat = hit at ( someone or something) with the flat of
one’s hand
 Spiel = an elaborate speech or story typically used by a
salesperson
 Bewildered = perplexed , confused; very puzzled
 Hedged = enclosed in something OR limit or qualify
 Pubescent = (a person) approaching the age of puberty
 Retaliate = make an attack in return for a similar attack/ repay
an injury or insult
 Restrained = reserved/ kept under control/ held in place
 Battalion = a large body of troops ready for battle/ a large
organized group of people pursuing a common aim
 Imploringly = to beg urgently or piteously for aid or mercy (e.g.
implore forgiveness)
 Admonishing/ admonish = warn or reprimand someone firmly/
advise or urge someone earnestly
 Reprimand = a formal expression of disapproval
 Presumably = used to convey that what is asserted is very likely
though not known for certain
 Transpire/ transpired = (of a secret or something unknown)
come to known; be revealed

 Initiate/ initiated = cause (a process or action) to begin


 Unabated = without any reduction in intensity or
strength (e.g. the storm was raging unabated)
 Coroner = an official who holds inquest into violent,
sudden or suspicious deaths
 Elapse/elapsed = (of time) pass or go by
 Inquiry/ enquiry = an act of asking information/ an
official investigation
 Manslaughter = the crime of killing a human being
without aforethought (intent to seriously harm or kill
someone)
 Infanticide = the crime of a mother killing her child
within a year of birth
 Perfunctory = (an action) carried out without real
interest feeling or effort
 Cavalry = (in the past) soldiers who fought on
horseback/ used to refer to a source of help or rescue in
an emergency especially as a last resort
 Coaxing = persistent gentle persuasion/ obtain
something (from someone) by gentle and persistent
persuasion
 Prise/prising = use force in order to move, move apart,
or open something
 Feigned = stimulated or pretended; insincere
 Famine = extreme scarcity of food / a shortage
 Liberal = willing to respect or accept behaviour or
opinions different from one’s own; open to new ideas
