Building Blocks
a letter recognition activity
ABC Building Blocks
Materials
• Letter card templates (pages 3 to 15)
• Building blocks (we used two sets of DUPLO® bricks)
• Hole punch and keyring (optional)
Instructions
1. Print the letter cards on regular paper or cardstock.
2. Cut out the letter cards on the dotted lines.
3. Laminate the cards or cover with clear contact paper.
4. Punch holes in the cards for easy storage on a large keyring.
Children can use the letter card templates as a guide. Some children prefer to build the
letters just as they are shown on the cards, carefully matching up each brick to ensure
that their creation is identical to the model. Other children are inspired to create their
own variations of the letters, and that is fine, too! The goal is to have an enjoyable
playtime experience while mastering the ABC’s.
Other variations
1. Find the letter: Say the name of a letter. Have your child find the corresponding
letter card.
2. Free-building: Build letters without using the letter cards as guides.
3. Match lowercase and uppercase letters: Show your child a lowercase letter and have
him build the uppercase version.
4. Don’t have Duplo-style bricks? To use with classic Lego bricks, print the letter card
templates at 40%.
